Not wanting to turn this into Mumsnet.

how ever.

Have any of you got any essentials that I should buy for the 1st year with my new born?

something people don't normally mention that worked brilliantly for you?

Or just a list of things to have in handy reach at all times?

You will need

Teetha
Coarse porridge oats (for chicken pox)
Annabel Carmel food book
HiSense Babysense
Plain white baby grows
Sleepsuits
Stairgate for your stairs and or kitchen
Calpol

You do not need

Video baby monitors
Baby baths
£1000 buggies
Corner protection
Plug covers
Bed guards
Fire guards

AS a father of three, I would echo maccapacca with a couple of additions,

as a man, baby monitors are garbage, but in the bigger picture it is good for your wife at first, as it relaxes her and lets her sleep, saving you the grief of putting up with an exhausted new mum.

Mum-to-be and mother-In-law, have already spent hours explaining why I need to buy the latest Icandy Push chair.:o

The lightest small and easy folding pushchair/buggy you can find. The massive prams and systems are a pain.

Nursing pillow. It should wrap around the waist.

You don't need complicated sterilisers. Microwave one is fine. I think the dishwasher might do the job too...

I'd get a car seat that lifts out so baby can stay in it. You can get like 0 to 4years to save money but it's nice to not have to wake them.

You won't need stair gates for some time and we've never needed a baby monitor.

In all seriousness, ask you mum.

Ok .. so she need to pass the solo shopping test with it.

Can she collapse it one handed whilst carrying a loosely tied 5 Kg bag of spuds and get it into a boot. For added realism, soak her with the hose (simulated rain), borrow some children to scream in her ear and you and your mates do grumpy old farts standing around tut-tutting and not offering to help.

Baby nail clippers are essential. For when they're a little older, a travel cot for around £30 which can be used as a little playpen rather than pay £80 for one marketed as such.

I haven't really used the Bumbo seat I bought, and I regret spending £800 on a Quinny pram, which has been used around 6 times and is pretty hard to fold down.

I've just bought a £60 buggy which is way easier to manage.

My baby is also more interested in the remote control and my phone than the toys I have bought, so I wouldn't go overboard with toys.

In the 5th to 6th year you'll be hiring a skip to throw it all in as you are sick to the back teeth of opening cupboards to find it stuffed full of plastic junk. I lost the plot one day and ordered a skip, dragged it to under an upstairs window and filled it with everything that hadn't been touched for a month. It was quite relaxing. The wife and kids sort of edged backwards and left me for the day.

People will love filling your house full of junk. If anyone offers cheques for the kids bank account take it.

If you buy a small snuggly comforter (you know the thing, often a small blanket with some sort of cuddly toy at the corner) make sure you buy at least two and preferably three. My two girls became totally devoted to them and sleep with them still (8 and 9 years old). Having more than one means you can chuck one in the wash, and even if one gets lost its not the emotional trauma it could be.

Something people never mention....pegs for the clothes line.

Baby clothes are a lot smaller, you can fit more in the washing machine and more on the line but you never have enough pegs.

Bumbo's are rubbish. Heard so many people supposedly recommending them but when you actually ask owners 90% of people say they are stupid and the kids don't like them.

Baby monitors, depends how big your house is. standard sized 3/4 bedroom house, don't bother.

A waterproof case for your mobile, they love playing and eating them.

If you've a hard sharp fire place, get some foam coving to go around them, saved our kids a few times from falls but they also use them as pillows to sleep :)

Avoid comforters or dummies, or anything like that. It can form an addiction, they can't sleep without them etc and it's a pain in the ass getting them to stop using them.

Car carrying seats with the z style handle are infinitely easier to carry than the straight across variety, amazon prime might be handy theses days with nappy deliveries and the 20% discount.

Never leave nappies on when they're full and always buy the better more expensive ultra absorbant dry feel option if theur bum gets sore you'll all pay the price.

Forget the joy of not being tired, when they're older always answer every question even when they play the why game it'll help uour baby's intelligence and keep you sharp wjich you'll need because of being sooo tired.
