Anyone with any idea when 1TB SSD's will be widely available without the huge premium?

512GB and 256GB's are "reasonably" price, well for SSD's now a days, so whats the hold back?

£400-£500 range.

I do not think there will be enough demand for such devices just yet. Few people need 1TB of high speed storage, and those that do would already be using RAID and potentially combining smaller SSD into a bigger pool.

I've got just under .5 of a TB of SSD and it's overkill for most peoples needs and 4TB of sata. Sata is fine for mass storage in most cases.

The market. There wont be enough people who can spend £400-500 on an ssd.

Companies were producing 256gb and 512GB drives that cost that much not very long ago and they were selling, not loads but were still selling.

If they could produce 256GB and 512gb drives for £400-£500 odd quid a year or two ago, why cant they produce 1TB drives for a similar price now? Since the GB/£ ratio will allow it for the same price bracket.

OCZ Octane Series 1 TB Internal SSD - Why is this £1600, what justifies the massive mark up

when the very same/similar drive is £300, for 512gb (and thats too much as well since you can get the m4 512gb for around £250) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-115-OC&groupid=701&catid=2104&subcat=2394

Ive got 2 x 256GB samsung 830, ones completly full with only 1/3rd of my games collection. Other is OS drive which is about 50% full.

I'm out of SATA 6GB ports, heck even out of SATA 2 ports, so can add another or raid.

I reckon 1TB SSDs around £400 would sell reasonably well.

Genuine question but what do you need that much space for??

Iv been living off a single 256gb ssd for years now and never seen the need for more space (just delete games and reinstall them when needed).

Oh and the form factor would have to change before they can make bigger than 512gb ssd's, ie they probably would have to make them in 3.5" drives instead of 2.5" as they still need quite a bit of physical space in them for the memory.

Games drive, i want all my games installed ready to play. I use my PC as a console replacement and when i have family friends over want to be able to fire up any game, without the need to download for hours on end, just to play.

Form factors not exactly a issue really, since every pc pretty much is 3.5" compatible.

Another option, something like this PCI-E card would expand your SATA III slots so you would have 2 more. Which will then allow you to run 2 more SSD's (512gb or whatever) without the need to wait for a 1TB one to be released.

It's just an option and will get you sorted out :)

Unfortunatly not possible. Ive got a shuttle X79 system and my GTX 670 is covering the 2nd and only other available slot.

Ive got an M-Sata slot free but is only sata2, and an esata on rear i/o.

Hmm, tough one then mate. Not sure, but maybe there might be some sort of card that takes power from your PSU or mobo and is like a hub? Like a USB hub but for SATA III HDD's/SSD's?

Another of my wacky ideas :P

256gb is plenty imo, paired with a big 2 or 3tb hdd,1tb of ssd is a lot of nand to maintain/ potentially fail/wear out ect
