I've managed to fill up my 1TB drive with the OS, games, music and movies/videos. I'll be needing to upgrade.

I'm a bit worried that if I buy a 5400rpm 2TB drive then I'm going to see a performance drop in boot times and game loading times. Or are they just as fast as my F1 Spinpoint 1TB?

I was considering buying a SSD, for the OS, games and start-up programs and then buy a 2 TB to store everything else on, use the 1TB as a back-up drive.

Is that going to be overkill in the search of speed or will I be just a well-off buying a 2TB drive?

I would buy seperate hard drives. The 2tb will be too slow and too multi purpose for a nippy operating system and games.

I currently have windows 7 and games on ssd and media on F3 1TB.

But you don't have to get ssd for decent performance. I used to have Windows and Games on my F3 plus some media i.e. music. My videos were housed on external drives. This was fine tbh but i upgraded coz i wanted to, not coz i needed to.

So, basically, if you have the money to spend get an SSD and an F3 for additional media storage. If not, no worries, just get an F3 1TB (or a couple) and put Windows/ Games on there plus some media. And keep your other media on your F1.

I was in a similar situation a while back. If you are anything like me it is the movies/videos that are taking up most of the space and growing fastest.

What I did was keep my games/apps/music on my primary (fastest) HDD and put the movies/videos on a second, slower HDD - one like this. As videos (even HD ones) don't need a quick HDD, they are happy there and don't clog up my main system disk. Meanwhile the primary HDD is much emptier and boots/runs fast.

Getting an SSD to put your OS/apps/games on is the fastest solution, but getting on with enough space for you (I think 160GB is a minimum for my stuff, but you may be different) is very expensive. If you have the cash - go for it, I suggest either intel X-25 M G2 or OCZ vertex, if you don't have the cash then F1 primary, F2 media is a good setup.
