I've been planing an upgrade for a while now.
The hard drive will be used as a main drive so would like it to be fast BUT at the same time I'm a bit of a silent freak so I'd like it to be silent as well. This can be partially sorted by using it on a foam sponge sitting in the case as I use with my current one, but it better not scream that loud.

That being said, I was initially looking at this , but I've googled it a bit and daaamn it's slow.:o

Is the Samsung or Seagate going to be too loud?
I'm especially looking forward to hearing opinions who have or have had them, because last time I bought my 320gb samsung all the reviews said it's dead silent and dam it ain't at all!

Fast and silent = SSD. If you can afford it, ideally you'd be wanting OS/apps etc on a 60/120GB Vertex/Samsung (64GB Samsungs are slower than 128GB ones), and then an F1 or something else quiet for storage.

I knew that, but my HDD budget can't be doubled overnight, that's why I was looking for a reasonable compromise.
So samsung?

F1 or F2, I've got both, and cant hear them, although the F2 should be quieter due to the lower spin speed, still a fast drive though.

You didn't mention a budget, or that you'd considered SSDs.

+1 for the F1s - always been inaudible to me.
