1TB Hitachi possibly died?

Hi.

Just disconnected it from my PC and everything is working as normal.

I posted in Windows forum about a software problem, turns out it was the HDD.

Is there anyway to either diagnose the HDD, or repair it? Possibly use some diagnostic software and place it on a USB drive and boot?

It was a Hitachi deskstar 1TB HDD.

I tried a program called HDTune and it found no errors.

Baffling it was, I took the HDD out, everything was working ok, so thought, ok I'll plug it in see what happens, it got to the Windows 8 splash screen and then I noticed it was repairing the drive :s, so all working as though nothing happened and the drive is apparently error free?

Very funny problem.
