I've got one of these because I have a shuttle and had 2 300GB drives inside already, I recently got myself a 1TB WD Caviar Black so now i have room for another HDD again.
What are the risks of busting the My Book open and will I have any temp problems putting it inside the case or will it just be a standard drive inside, while on the subject will it be a 5400 or 7200RPM drive?

Cheers for any help.

It will be a normal 3.5inch drive inside the MyBook, most likely WD's 1Tb Green drive which has a varying RPM between 5400 and 7200.

ah it's a Western Digital HD Caviar GP/1TB SATA II 7200rpm 16MB cache

that'll do nicely.

Anything I should think about before breaking the case, am I likely to break anything?

right busted open, very straight forward tbh. HDD now in shuttle, works fine.
Nice green power inside as storage drive, pretty quiet.

Oh and 2 degrees cooler than the caviar black

Right click the drive in my computer, go to properties, click the hardware tab and find the my book, the code for mine was WD10EAVS, i googled it and found out it was a WD green power.
WD1001FALS is the code for a WD caviar black

Anyone know if its a standard drive in the MyBook World?

All of Western Digital's external drive range will have standard 3.5inch desktop drives in them. In fact that applies to ANY external drive from ANY manufacturer.

The smaller so called "passport" drives (again any manufacturer) will have 2.5inch notebook drives.
