If all you are finding is Cat D cars your budget is insufficient for the car you want to buy.

I'm with fox tbh, save up a bit longer or look at cars where you'd get a good non written off example.

I'm just waiting for acme to come in saying there's nothing wrong with buying Cat'd vehicles :p

EDIT: Ah nvm he beat me to it :p

I don't think you read my reply to fox... The budget isn't so much an issue. I'm happy to go up to £10k with £6k cash and my mini part ex and the rest if any finance/bank loan if necessary... That's if I don't finance the lot and keep hold of my cash...

aah I missed it mate sorry

In that case then I'd rule out CatD's tbh, yes they could end up being fine,
but they could end up being held together with woodscrews and expanding foam.

I personally would go on condition. take someone that knows what theyre on about and as long as they've got evidence to backup the repair and the repairs been completed at a good level it wouldn't put me off personally. I've had quite a few cat d myself and haven't had any issues selling them

you can also get companys like the aa to pop down and have a look although they might be other companies that are cheaper. ive had someone do this on a car was selling and the part that seemed the most useful was where they go around with their paint thickness detector as that tells you what panels have been sprayed so you can see if it matches the seller description

I bought a car which had damage to the door and was perfectly repaired.

It looks like it had been used in a demolition derby and then repaired by a blind man with a bucket of plaster.

And yet you still drove it away.

The Scirocco's, Golf's with a map are pretty peppy to be fair, they're quick enough to be classed as hot hatches, I've never warmed to Scirocco's myself though. As for a Cat D car which is around 8k.... don't be daft, keep on looking for something less dubious. If you are querying if it's a good idea on the internet, then it probably isn't.

So, pulled up this morning with a gap in the rain, slightly miffed about the weather as it's hard to tell a respray in flat light and rain... anyway, the dealer wasn't there, next door gave him a ring and said he'll be 10 minutes-not a great start.

Had a good look at the lines, all looked good apart from O/S bonnet gap wasn't running parallel; the vertical one at the bottom of the A pillar. Ran my hands along the sills and inner arches seeing as I wasn't about to roll around on the floor in this weather. Found two dents on the sill which actually you can just make out in this pic

Follow the door shut line down.
Also one of the plastic trims around the O/S fog light wasn't clipped in right, turns out the clips are all broken off. Oh yeah and the Landsail tyres.... Lets move on.

Anyway armed with that, the dealer turned up, seemed a nice enough fella tbh. Gave it the typical dealer crap about how clean it all is, went a long with it all but obviously I kept what I knew up my sleeve though for now. Onto the test drive. As echoed above... I'm not sure I'd put it in the 'Hot Hatch' territory... Yeah it goes but I really don't think it'd pull away from my Mini but it did drive very nice, typical VW. Lots of gadgets, panoramic roof was nice. Engine, whilst power delivery was smooth and evidently pulled well didn't have the grunt I was expecting... OK so it is only 200bhp but I did expect more. Although it did overcome the tyres. Shock

Got back, for the right price I was still interested but I knew he was unlikely to come to where I was at before we even started talking numbers... He reckons it's easily a £10.5k car that was dirt cheap. I knew from there we weren't even reading the same book let alone the same page... He asked why I thought £8k was too much, I said I came here to look at an £8k cat D that was immaculate. you told me you couldn't find any reason at all as to why it may have been written off and there is this this and that wrong with it... You've gotta move some and give me decent cash for the Mini to get me interested...

He went on to show me how the leather wasn't scuffed at all, carbon wrapped mirrors bla blah. Pulled the bonnet, look mate you can see how straight it is.

Mmmkay lets have a nosey under the bonnet whilst we're here... I was no longer interested... But for completion i looked around the strut towers and chassis legs. Seam sealer cracked, a wrinkle on the O/S that hadn't been pulled out, the N/S was the same but not as bad... I showed him, 'look it's bent' his response was, 'no it's not look both sides are like that' Yes sir, a good whack to the front end... Then his mate pipes up ' He's wasting your time, he aint got the cash!'

F you pair I'm off.

Viewed 3 more, all diesel but to be honest I'd much rather have the petrol, and it'll quite possibly have to be a late 09 onwards 210 model... The hunt continues.

Well done for walking away. It just sums up 90% of cat D's there's always something. And as for his childish mate saying you ain't got the cash I think I would have chinned him tbh :D or u should have pulled your cash out and laughed at him.

Increase your budget and buy a proper one, I don't see why theres such reluctance to do it the right way if you're able to be flexible with the budget?

Unless you have the funds to cover a timing chain/DSG failure repair, I'd strongly advise against buying one without warranty let alone it being a Cat D also.

Just caught up with this, glad you gave it a miss, the car sounds almost as bad as the guy trying to sell it! :D

Just looking on my phone screen it doesn't look straight!

Plenty more fish in the sea..... :)
