My Gigaworks T20's just died so I'm in the market to "upgrade", I have no idea which is the best route to take so I come here and beg for your help !

Good 2.1 speakers, such as SP2500 or Aego M, will be good all rounders, but primarily they are going to excel when it comes to gaming and movie use, if you're looking for some weight to explosions, etc.

For music though, stereo is always best. So it really depends on what your priorities are, and what desk space you have. You may not have room for larger speakers. If not then the Aego M's will be the ideal choice. Very good speakers and enough cheaper than the SP2500 to make them a better buy in my opinion.

If music is what you're going to use the speakers for most though, then if you have the desk space, bookshelf speakers and a little T amp, would make a great set up; or maybe some powered monitor speakers.

Movies I watch on my TV which has a cracking Samsung Soundbar/Sub combo, Mainly Music and Gaming on my PC

Must say the Aego M looks very nice, and desk spac is at a premium, I would'nt be able to fit Bookshelf speakers on my desk I don't think :/

I had Creative i-Trique L3600's, which were supposed to be a pretty decent 2.1 set up.

Replaced with Edifier R2000DB's, and they absolutely blow the 2.1 set out of the water - and that includes in terms of bass too (perhaps helped because the bass is coming right at you, rather than tucked under the desk).

I don't think you are going to get a very good amp and speakers for £160. I would instead look to either active speakers which will not require you to buy a separate amplifier. As already mentioned the Corsair 2500 is a meant to be good.

Traditionally with PC sound and speakers that are 2.1 or 5.1 you often get a gap around the mid range of frequencies. This results in bass heavy sounds like gunshots and explosions in games being taken care of by the subwoofer as the midrange is lacking in the satellites. With a 2.0 setup there is no .1 to take care of those lower frequencies so when they design the speakers they have to make sure they provide (within the price point) a good coverage of all the frequency bands low, medium and high.

Its a slippery slope though, as soon as you start to hear what HIFI gear sounds like you will see what you have been missing and your bank account will empty very quickly.

With gaming, I would just stick to something that does a good job and makes gaming sound good. And from what I have heard as long as you have a reasonably good sound card the 2500 will definitely do that.

OP are you willing to go second hand?

Providing your patient you could get a Pioneer A-Z 360 from the bay with built in DAC for under £60. Then £100 for some surplus stock speakers. It can all be sourced from the bay.

Just a small word of warning stay away from the Corsair 2500 because they are EOL product and if anything goes wrong then Corsair will be of no help. I have just enquired about a replacement control pod and they have none left which leaves me with a pair of perfectly working speakers with not being able to turn them on/off properly.

I am sure there is some law that says companies have to carry spare parts for a certain amount of time after they stop selling a product.

Also looking at the corsair website they are still selling the SP2500.

Thats shocking and clearly not true that the sp2500 are EOL if they are still selling them and are still honouring warranties. I would contact their ceo with a complaint and point him to that thread and outline your situation, I am sure if you did this you will get your problem resolved quickly.

Here is the ceo's email address:

Another vote for Aego M. Had mine a few years now and unless you're trying to fill a huuuuge room, even then they're not bad, they do a lovely job at their price point.

I wouldn't discount any of those 2.0 suggestions in the earlier reply either, but I'd include the Tannoy Mercury line as a good alternative. I had a pair of the originals many years ago and I can't imagine they've ruined them since then.

Message to CEO done.

I have also just been told by someone else from Corsair that I can order the product via their website, bit pointless really when he clearly didn't read the part with me being from the UK and there is no option to purchase outside of USA and Canada.

So I got one telling me there is none left and another telling me to purchase from the website.

Love to know what result you get from contacting the ceo. Please post back with an update. :)

All I can say m8 about Corsair is their customer support are great :)

Got a message today via ticket support saying they are shipping me a new controller free of charge so a big thumbs up to Corsair and a big thank you to Alexander who sorted it out for me.

Excellent result. So the letter to the CEO worked?

It's funny you should say that because I actually never got a reply from the CEO. Though next day I got a reply via a ticket I opened, telling me they will be sending one out free of charge and I don't have to return the faulty one I have.

Just hope it comes quick because I'm having to keep the pod open to turn the speakers on at the minute.

does it have to be 2.1?

why not 2.0?

coupled with a stereo amp will blow away a 2.1 setup for music, not movies though where you want rumbly bass.

Its what I did. My current PC audio setup is:

Yamaha RX-V357 amp
A pair of Q- Acoustics 1020i (£40 second hand)
3 x Creative S700 THX for centre and rear surround (£9 each second hand - small 2 way speakers)
SPDIF Optical out from motherboard to amp

Switch to stereo on the amp for listening to music and other mode for DTS for games and movies. Sounds great in both modes. I can also use headphones with a mic by using the analogue connections on the front PC panel.
