2.1 speakers, which set?

Hi all,

I've currently got some Logitech 5.1 speakers and they are really good but I just dont need them any more and I want to swap out to a smaller set. I've just got too many speakers on an already crouded desk...

I'm looking at 2.1 but I want good quality. I've got a budget of £100, but can be flexed above depending on how good the speakers are.

So... What do you suggest?

And no, I don't have a sound card. I use the onboard sound device it does me very well. Should I get a sound card?

Many thanks,

Agent.

The Acoustic-Energy Aego M are about the best 2.1 PC speakers you can get, to get any better you'd be looking at some proper Hi-Fi seperates. OcUK sell the Aegos for £92 or so which is a very good price for how good they are.

And about the soundcard, I noticed a massive difference when I went from my onboard sound to a Creative X-Fi. Games and music just sound so much better. I'd reccommend going for an Xtreme Music if you have the money.

Brillian, thanks for that Aidoscuz!

I'll probably skip the soundcard for now. Reason being is I have a USB headset + mic so when gaming I use those, I just want the speakers for music and they don't have to be AMAZING but still good.

Thank again mate.

Aidoscuz, are there any diadvantages you hae found with your speakers? Im in 2 minds if I should get them. I currently have a crappy 10 quiid set I bought years ago.

Thanks

Well my speakers have been acting a bit strange recently. When I first got them, they were absolutely brilliant - they were way punchier and clearer than my previous crappy 2.1 set. There was loads of bass, and they were really loud.

After about a month the subwoofer became really quiet though, and the bass was getting drowned out by the satellites. I just RMA'd them last week. It was really annoying since they sounded so good at the start.

I'd say this was all just down to my set though. There's a good few people on the forums that have them and are really happy with them, so I think I was just unlucky. While they were working I didn't really notice any disadvantages, although the bass adjustment was slightly annoying. There's a small switch on the back with 3 positions so it's not quite as flexible as having a proper dial.

To cut a long story short though, I'd say you should go for them. There's an amazing difference between cheap speakers and quality ones like these.

Hope this helps

I just got a set of Z-2300 speakers. Their soooo good. I cant even say in words how good they are. Ive just played "Lose Yourself" and the bass is so intense. Also the THX certification ensures quality. Only get if you have room. The sub is stupidly big. Bigger than youd imagine for 120 watts.

aego m's are the best without question.

In$oMniA, THX ensures nothing except that creative have paid to have THX stamped on their sets. When it comes to pc spekaers, its a useless standard tbh.

here's my 100w sub mwaha

I heard them in a shop, and even with the bass on the sub turned to the minimum the boom was terrible. Not good for music at all imo. Also THX PC certification doesn't mean a whole lot. My setup isn't THX, does it make it bad, I don't think so :D

If you haven't already decided on the Aegos then, if you're willing to spend a little more time and effort then look into some second hand hifi. For £100 you could buy something infinitely nicer than any PC speaker setup. When I switched from PC based sub/sat combos to proper hi-fi I never looked back.

Excuse my lack of knowledge but the specs say that these have 3 x RCA Phono - Line level. Does that mean it has 3 sets of the white and red plugs so you can plug in 3 separate appliances (i.e. computer, dvd player and xbox)?

Cheers

Lol what are you lot talking about. Of course THX means something. If you look at the requirements to be THX certified youll find that speakers have to meet stringent near close line, off-axis and on-axis frequency response graphs and sensitivity. The subwoofer alone has to be able to play music at 20Hz distortion free. The list goes on and on. Try googling it.

I am also by no means saying that non-THX certified speakers are no good. That would be a ridiculous thing to say. I also totally agree that any high-fidelity system would probably make any PC sound system look emarressed.

THX certification varies loads. Ultra 2 is awesome and is quite a large benchmark to beat. THX for PC speakers is a pile of turd and a lof of equivalent speakers could probably beat it.

thats very agressive lol. THX means none of that when it comes to pc speakers. If you think that for one second a subwoofer as small as the logitech z2300's is going to play anyhting at all worthy of a mention at 20hz then you are sorely mistaken.

As yourself this. how many 8" HT subs have THX certification? so why would the 8" z2300 sub live up to the demands of THX, unless THX was watered down to the point it meant nothing;)

Adeqately plays 20 Hz if you ask me. Youd be hard done to find anything like a flat line at 20 Hz

And as im sure you know dB is an arbitary, logarithmic scale so the numbers can only really used for comparison in the changes of the graph, here is a comparison of a Omega Pro 12" Subwoofer 8 ohm impedance 700watt

Not bad for 90 quid.
