If someone could explain, I would be very gratefull.

Im aware CPU speeds on the current gen chips are rated differently to the last gen... but....

If I have a 2.2Ghz AMD X2 and only use it with games supporting only 1 core, my instinct tells me this is will run slower than a P4 running at 3.8Ghz? Is this true?

If it is, I am mainly playing games supporting 1 core, am I not better off going for a single core chip running at a faster speed?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure a 3.8GHz P4 is going to be pretty much faster across the board compared to a 2.2GHz A64.

Jokester

Edit: A64s excelled at games, but it'll be close.

From what I recal a single core AMD64 CPU running at 2.2ghz was a 3700 (equilivant to 3.7ghz P4).

With the second core free to run windows IMO the AMD dual core chip would be superior. Now if you overclocked the AMD CPU which could be easily done it would be considerably faster :D

Stick with the AMD ;)

Faster in single core maybe.. however.. worth the trade off in applicatons where dual core comes into effect? I doubt it as though it might be faster it'll only be marginally so and since games are more GPU bound the gap is closed even more.
