just had some junk mail come through but it caught my attention cause of the storage volumes of 2.5" drives these days. This got me thinking that maybe when airflow inside a case is important, maybe using 2.5" hdds instead would really help.

or are there better reasons NOT to use these instead of 3.5"?

Cost per GB is generally more. So if you have a standard tower without an airflow problem or one where cooling isn't too important it doesn't really make sense. Although you can get a 500GB one for £50 now, the 3.5" equivalent is about £30-£35.

Makes them more more suitable for mini PC modding projects though. I belive the new nettop Revo's from Acer use laptop hard drives.

I use a 320gb WD Scorpio Black lappy drive (7200 rpm) in my main PC. It's indistinguishable from my sammy f1 speed wise but a damn site quieter. This is the reason I use it, rather than airflow.
