When i plug in my 2.5" USB powered IcyBox caddy into any of my computers it runs fine but as soon as i plug it in via a USB extension cable so i don't need to lean around the back of the computer it refuses to run and the caddy box LED blinks on and off which i assume means it's not getting enough USB power to spin up.

It does the same thing on both of my extension cables , Have i been unlucky enough to buy the wrong type of cable twice ?

thanks

Odd as one of the extension cables is really thick so it could more than handle the power so i wonder if it's the way they are wired ?

i have this same problem, its odd like you say mate. im going to make up a lead with some thick core cable and see if it still happens. my usb powered drives just click like they are trying to spin up but they never do. i wonder if you could get around it by using a powered usb hub?

At a guess you might be needing a double headed USB cable and 2 extensions to get enough power to the caddy. Sounds like it's very borderline with a single headed cable and the drive you have.

Greebo just tried his 2.5" caddy and it works fine from a single USB socket but as soon as he added a D-Link USB extension cable it stopped working ?

And people use them for Wi-fi dongles so the cable must carry power just fine. ?
