Well, following on from Gemma's crash thread , she needs another car asap, with a budget of £2.5k.

She previously had an R plate Ford Fiesta 1.25 LX, So is something like a Focus a logical upgrade? What kind of age/milage/spec would we be looking at for this budget?

Another idea is a Citroen Xsara - I was thinking about quite a high spec car for the money.

Needs:

- Reasonable amount of space, as she has horses and needs to cart saddles/equipment about

- Not too bothered about power, but enough to get her out of trouble, Focus 1.6 for example.

- Must be a 4 door hatch

- Preferably petrol, but she's willing to try an oil burner.

Oh, she's had a poke around a mondeo and wasn't a fan.

So...ideas guys?

99-01 high mileager from looking at em down here... 100k-ish

1.6 is a nice enough engine for it though... defo a logical upgrade.

Ok, we've seen something different

Its a Renault Megane - 1.6e - 5 Door.

Spec list:

Power Steering
Electric Windows
Electric Mirrors
ABS
Air Con

Its on an S plate - has 47k on it. Told by the garage that any issues will be sorted on it (ABS light is on, air-con needs re-gassing) and will be given a full service including doing the cam belt.

Is it worth £2450, or should we offer less, like £2100?

Thanks :)

I got a V reg 1999 1.6 Focus with 66k miles on it for £2995, from a dealer though. Im sure if you hunt around you get something like that cheaper if you look privately?

Megané is a nice vehicle, but a little cramped from my experience. Maybe this wont bother you, but I like my comfort :)

In my experience (a little bit) Megane handles like turd. Personally I'd go for the focus

She's coming from a Fiesta mind ;) :p

I'll bear it in mind on the test drive :)

My bro had a megane before he drove it into a post. Handling wise it was pretty scary in the wet, it would understeer everywhere even though it had nearly new tyres. Also the integrated radio stopped working every so often and the central locking didn't always work.

I had a 306 at the time and although the interior wasn't as modern, it didn't feel like is was going to fall to bits as quickly as the megane. The steering on the 306 had much more feedback and much more confident around corners.

A focus would be a much better bet if she can get one in budget. A work collegue has a 1.6lx and doesn't feel too slow even with 5 people onboard.

Also for the money she could get a good spec xsara as they're cheap and plenty around to choose from.
