2.8l z3 how terrible of an idea is this?

Well we have one

And have had an enjoyable 2 years with it. Not very refined but for the money what other convertible will be. Yes a mx5 will out corner it but that is missing the point as the engine ( out of a 7 series ) has loads of grunt and makes a great sound.

From a 7 series? The engine was used in all models except the 8, it's hardly exclusive.

I'm interested though, what is it about these that makes everyone slate the handling? They are basically an E30 with a quicker steering, and people really rate e30s??

Prone to tram-lining due to chassis twist, helped by a strut brace across the top of the engine. Directional tread patterns do not suit the zed and give it a disconnected from the road feeling.Cured by correct tires being fitted.

Whilst looking back, I do wish I'd bought a 740i, I have to say that given the sheer weight of an e38, the 728i performed remarkably well given what it was tasked with lugging around,it never felt underpowered as such but you did have to work the engine if you wanted to make swift progress, which seemed slightly at odds with driving a 7 series, but it would waft along @100+ for as long as you wanted - not that excessive weight would be an issue with a Z3!

Having said that, working an M52 for its living is no bad thing, a very smooth engine with a lovely exhaust note. :)

Thank you, I will have a rummage around that site.

A friend used to have one. I thought I would love it but I found the build quality quite poor. Maybe he was just unlucky.

I love my 3.0i Coupe, but I'm not sure a 2.8 auto with no structural rigidity will be anywhere near as much fun.

Having said that, £2000 isn't a lot.

I would like a coupe (one of my favourite shapes of all time even if the wrong side of marmite to most) but don't want to drop z3m money on a car that will rarely be used and is largely a no parking sign;)

Well I liked it and bought it. Fits the car port like a glove given the flared arches so have to drive in forward. It's in decent order (I think) for the year. No pics yet, but then again I haven't posted the x5 either so probably better to admit I won't get around to it.

That's lovely. I'll try and take a few snaps, may be little and large if I get around to it. Getting a new rear window on the 2nd so after that.

Didn't realise is was a coupe! Weren't they mainland Europe only?
The non-M Coupes were LHD only, so North America and Europe.
I think it's great. An M would've been overkill so it's a good compromise as the 3.0 M54 is a peach.
