2 different breeds of cats = OK? And other cat questions

cat tree look superb, trust me , they will love it
We shall find out on Wednesday, when I bring the Egyptian Mau home.
The Bengal's father was loving the cat tree he had at the Bengal breeder's house, so I'm hoping that his son will also like one.
I want one of those cat tree things, but human size
Hehehe.
Looking at the tree after putting it up, I was tempted to start climbing it, but it wasnt big enough.
The cat tree is quite sturdy. Obviously, at this stage, the cat is young and the 2nd cat hasnt arrived. In a year's time I will have a better idea of how the cats are treating the cat tree and whether it can handle the abuse.
Well, last night, the first kitten came home with me.
He is Egyptian Mau and has super fast reflexes (characteristic of this breed). I have thus called him Reflex.
He loves the cat tree. 85% of his time is spent on/in it. He even slept in it. I bought a nice cat bed, which he totally ignored, choosing instead to make his bed in one of the dark covered area in the cat tree.
What happened last night...
Got him home at around 2130hrs.
He was scared of me a little, however, he insists on following me around the house, even though he is stand off-ish. He is used to living in a HUGE cat family and he clearly misses his feline friends. Anyway, he only needs to hang on for a month when his Bengal playmate arrives. I think they will be ideally suited to eachother because, the Egyptian Mau is very athletic, while the Bengal is a dominating breed which harrasses fellow kittens/cats. Hence the Egyptian Mau will have the energy levels to deal with his younger Bengal friend.
It was a tough night last night. The kitten slept in spits and spurts, as he is still very scared. I slept in the lounge with him, as whenever I would leave the room, he screamed and made a racket.
He is still not eating much. He likes "real" chicken. Loves it in fact, but the breeder did tell me to give wet food only as treats. Once every other day. His dry food is the stuff that will make him grow up healthy, which he doesnt seem to like. If this situation doesnt improve in the next few days, I may have to starve him until he eats the dry food. We shall see.
He has not drank any water yet.
Litter tray activity - 100% spot on. No accidents.
One thing that Reflex did was very strange last night. I got him home and after about 3hrs (during which time he was making a lot of screaming noises), I switched on the music. He immediately got scared and ran out of the lounge and hid in the hallway. He eventually came back in, but this time was totally quiet. He seemed confused as to where the music was coming from and was looking in the direction of the speakers. He then got back onto the cat-tree and went to sleep.
Oh, and he loves his exercise. He runs and runs till he gets out of breath. He then waits 10secs to catch his breath, then starts again.
I'll take some more pics today, of his actually standing up, rather than the half-asleep pics, Ive posted above.

Looks so cutehe's your buddy so spoil him to an extent with the chicken and other things cats might like to eat (which aren't junk) and drink.

You should see when he is chasing the cat toy. He is very very fast. Typical of this breed. He isnt an independent cat and likes human or feline company (although that isnt surprising coming from a cattery full of cats and kittens). When I leave the room, he either follows me around or he will make a lot of noise, going silent when I re-enter the room. He really does need a feline companion, unfortunately, he will have a 1 month wait for the Bengal.
I dont want to spoil him. I do however, want him to grow strong and healthy. I saw his father yesterday (who was in stud and caged outdoors), and he was EXTREMELY lean. His athletism was evident though. Those portly cats that we all see roaming on the streets wouldnt stand a chance against these cats.
What does it sound like when it makes noises? Does he like to be carried around?

When you leave him on his own, he can sound similar to a baby crying. Its irritating.
Today, I heard him purr for the first time and he let me roughly rub him, without running away. Obviously, when he has his feline friend, they will wrestle and play-fight, so this is something he is definitely missing right now.
He does not like to be carried around, but thats probably because he is an Egyptian Mau. They like their rear legs to usually be on firm ground. They aren't lap cats.
Surprisingly, Egyptian Mau cats are one of the few cats that can play fetch.
He is still sleeping and lethargic, but once he wakes up I shall get some proper pictures.
I'm looking up the "dry food vs wet food" debate right now. I want him to be nice and strong for when the Bengal arrives in a month. The Bengal will be A LOT more stronger than the Egyptian Mau, though 1 month age difference might give the Egyptian Mau the edge. To give you an idea, the Bengal is like a wrestler, while the Egyptian Mau is like a 200/400m runner.
The Egyptian Mau breeder had a HUGE cat run. In fact, they had several. They live in the middle of nowhere and have a HUGE plot of land on which their detached property sits.
That sure gave me an idea of what could be achieved. I can either do that or cat proof the garden (difficult).
Cats really need to jump about and scratch things,
if left indoors they may start with your sofa and table lamps
This was exactly why I bought the cat tree. Currently, the 3 month old Mau isnt able to jump up the entire tree with ease. He gets out of breath easily (I'm working on his fitness) and needs to think how he is going to climb up the tree. He is also a little scared of heights, so sometimes doesnt readily want to jump down from great heights, even though I feel he can do it quite easily. I'm sure in as little as a month I will have jumping very high. His father was VERY athletic.
But are you trying to say that the Mau (haha sounds like Chairman Mao) doesnt enjoy affection?
He does, but he needs to really get used to you a lot. Also different cats from the same breed have different personalities, but in general, the Egyptian Mau cats will tend to come to you when they want attention and not the other way around. They are not typically lap cats. If you force one into your lap, their breed dictates that they will jump off at the earliest opportunity. Of course, there are always exceptions, within the breed.
An exteme example would be a super light bronze male I took a look at (at the same breeder). He was beautiful. The best look Egyptian Mau I had ever seen. 5 months old. His picture did not do him justice. When I first saw him, I thought, he will be the one I take home. Alas, his personality wouldve been a BIG problem for me. He didnt seem to like other cats. When playing, he was shy away; while all the other cats of all ages were competing for the toy being dangled in the air, this cat would sit on the sofa and observe. If a kitten came close and harrassed him, he would hiss and scream at the kitten. No other cat in that cattery behaved in this manner, including the studs, who were not neutered. Even the cat breeder did not touch that cat. This would be the most extreme example of what an Egyptian Mau.

It was, especially when the previous night, there was a lot of crying. I think he missed mum and the rest of his brothers/sisters. He is definitely lonely and NEEDS a 2nd cat. In 1 month, his wish will be granted.

If you like cute, you might want to look into the Maine **** breed. They are pretty much the biggest cats available, however, they are super cute. Even when old, they are very lovable, affectionate and laid back.
Are cats like these aggressive (or similar words) towards strangers? If say, you brought someone back one nightwould kitty be unfriendly?
Do they scratch people for no reason or even bite?
I saw at least 15 Egyptian Mau cats at the breeder. None were aggressive towards me (a stranger).
The light bronze male (see above post), was only aggressive towards other cats. With people, he just runs away.
I will train him and the Bengal on a harness. In the short term, I can always take them for a walk in the garden.
I would never let him out of the house unsupervised though. If I did, I would give it 72hrs before he and the Bengal got nicked. Remember, these are pedigree cats, not street moggies.

I think if you can put together a cat-run, then that is the ideal, as it allows the cat to enjoy the outdoors, while being protected from other animals, humans and dangers.
The garden cat proofing is done by having 6-7ft high fences. Then at the top of the fence, all the way around the fence, you put a netting that goes up and then curves inwards. This makes it incredibly difficult for a cat to get out. It does work, however, trees can be a big problem due to their ever growing branches.
Overall, a cat run is cheaper and more secure.

Some pedigree cats are highly susceptible to diseases. They simply dont have the genes (in-breeding) or the immune system to handle it. You send them outside, they kill a few rats, pick up a disease and die. It really is too risky. All the breeders of Maus and Bengals Ive been in contact with, all advocate keeping the cats in captivity. Not a single breeder has stated that they would be happy to allow their kittens/cats to roam the streets.
Gurusan has lovely cats. He keeps them house-bound, because he knows that those are not the sort of cats you allow out, to associate (and possibly fight) street-wise moggies. Pedigree cats cannot be treated in the same way as moggies.

His eyes are gradually turning green, from blue (see earlier pics of him). He is also noticably larger than before.
I'm quite apprehensive with regards to how the Egyptian Mau will behave with the new arrival. The Egyptian Mau will be a month older than the Bengal, though what makes me apprehensive is the fact that the Mau behaves in an extremely "wild" manner, eg. he happily bites and scratches without much thought, though the biting has reduced, compared to a few weeks back. He is also very fast and very strong. This is what he is looking like these days:

Dont be fooled by his innocent looking face. He is a terror and always tries to dominate me. Even when he was at his breeder, he used to chase the other cats of his litter. He definitely has a dominant personality, so it should be interesting to see how he behaves with the Bengal, who is also reputed to have a dominant personality.

The Egyptian Mau is feeling very racey right now. He is jumping, running and even at times, attacking me. I think he feels a little neglected as I left him alone for 7hrs today.
I'm wondering how the Bengal will cope with him. We shall find out in a few days I guess.

Dear Lord, I hope they dont chase up the curtains. So far, I havent seen Reflex run up the curtains and I hope it stays this way. The Bengal breeder did say though, that his Bengals do have a habit of doing this.
The Bengal arrives in 2 days, so I promise to update this thread at that time.
Its a long journey as well - travelling from Bournemouth to London, door to door is about 3.5hrs, each way, so both the Bengal and I will be tired, after we return from the trip.

Well, the Bengal arrives tomorrow and out of all the days to do it, Reflex decided to fall off the cat tree and hurt his left rear leg. He is now walking with a limp, however, I dont feel it is a broken bone or anything serious. I believe he simply has a bruise. When I press his left rear leg, he doesnt flinch (something he would do if it was broken). I shall give it till Tuesday and if he is still limping, I will take him to the vet.
His accident might be a blessing in disguise as he wont be able to dominate the new arrival, immediately. This will give the Bengal a chance to settle in without being physically bullied by the older cat.
Anyway, I took a few pics of Reflex playing around on the cat tree yesterday (before his injury).

To be honest, the Egyptian Mau breed is a little too athletic for the Bengal, which means that the Bengal stands no chanceand will be dominated by the Egyptian Mau.
They had a few scraps and the Egyptian Mau was easily coming out on top, at which point I was intervening. At some point, I will have to let them sort out their differences, without intervening, but hopefully, the Bengal will learn to run away from the Mau - something he isnt doing yet.
The problem is that the Bengal is a little too brave for his own good. He attempts to chase the Mau and this usually results in the Bengal being rolled onto his back.
