I had 2 x 2gb of XMS3 memory which was working fine the model number was
CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 1.65v ver 2.3. I decided to purchase an extra 2 x 2gb of the same model number and voltage but when i got them they were ver 6.0.
My system fails the mem86+ test when i have all 4 sticks in place but no problems if i only use 2 sticks.

Could the different versions really make that much difference?

What is make and make and model of your motherboard?

Is the system overclocked?

Have you tested the new sticks on their own - replacing your original sticks and memtested them?

Also, have you tried the original 2 sticks in the other 2 DIMM slots - with the other slots empty?

i have treid all 4 sticks individually and in pairs with no problem, it is only when i have all 4 in that memtest fails.
I have the Asus P8Z68 - V Pro motherboard set to run at stock speeds

Try setting the timings and voltages manually and run memtest again.

Just make sure your using the latest version of memtest.

I was getting several BSOD and quite a few other problems. when i tested all 4 sticks using the latest memtest some times it would pass all tests then fail on the 2nd run. With only 2 sticks (of either version) they passed 5 tests with no errors.

You need to input the settings for the memory manually - to ensure it's running at the correct frequency, timings and voltage.

e.g. 1600Mhz, 9-9-9-24 and 1.65V (you may be able to lower this later)

Thanks for your help. Have you got any idea what the mobo would set the timings at when in auto?
Also i'm not sure if the 2 things are connected but when i had 4 sticks of ram i was getting problems with things like scannow which would never complete. As soon as i went to 2 sticks scannow completed with out a problem.

I have run CPUz but don't know how to post the image can you help

You probably have an image similar to this:

[/QUOTE]

Write down the values for:

  • DRAM Frequency
  • CL
  • tRCD
  • tRP
  • tRAS
  • Command Rate

If they're the same just post back saying as such - if not post back values for each.

My screenshot is the same as yours but i am confused about the spd screen which shows 3 jedec columns which show different values.

I've fixed your screen shot link (see below).

Ignore the SPD tab. That shows certain settings which are stored on the RAM sticks.

The memory tab shows how the RAM is actually running.

Try running the RAM at 2T instead of 1T.

You need to go into the BIOS and set your voltage, frequency and timings manually as your memory is not running at spec - and as, suggested, change the Command Rate to 2T.

Your memory should be running at:
  • 1600Mhz (your frequency at present is reading as 1338MHz i.e. 2 x 669)
  • 9-9-9-24 (timings - these are OK in your image)
  • 1.65V (max voltage - this can be lowered once you're stable)
  • 2T (Command rate - reading as 1T in your image)

Then test the system - memtest and use and abuse with games/apps.

Thanks for all your help guys, i will do all the suggestions tonight as it will be nice to run with 8gb of ram. At the moment i have 4gb sat on my desk which is about as much use as a chocolate ashtray.
I'll let you know how i get on.

Hi Guys
I have finally had a chance to set the frequency on my memory to 1600Mhz. I haven't changed the command rate but have run 4 hours of memtest with no errors at all.

Hopefully that will be the end of it.
Thanks
