I was planning to get 2 hd's, one for the os and apps and the other for storage. I want them to be relatively quiet and speedy with combined size of 300gb or so. Any recommendations? Thanks

Welcome to the forums, the Seagate 7200.10s as mentioned by wizardmaxx are excellent drives but they cost slightly more than some others, you could also look at the Samsung Spinpoints, they are a shade cheaper, still pretty nippy and quiet.

The seagates is it! What do you think about getting one Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB for the OS and apps and Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA-II 16MB for storage?

Thing is, is that i have a spare maxtor 160gb ide hd too and i may want to use that also for storage. So should i get one barracuda 7200.10 for OS and use my old maxtor for storage or will that hinder my speed?

Just get two 200GB 7200.10's. You don't want to use a 7200.9 for your OS drive, because it will be slightly slower loading times than the 7200.10.

And DON'T use the Maxtor! It'll fail, you'll cry, and it generally won't be pleasent. ;)
