2 HDD's important for a gamer?

My guess is that what you've heard is ... install Windows on one HD and have your games (and everything else) installed on another. Only real reason for this (as far as I can see) is that if you have to re-install Windows for some reason, you don't loose all your data. Which is fine for data files but for installed programs!? As the registry would be on your re-formated disk, I expect you would have to re-install any games anyway! Only a guess...

Someone else might have a better idea.

it is faster, lots of ppl buy 74gb raptors, install windows on it and your games and it will fly and they buy 500gb drives for storage like movies, music etc. but its far from essential, you can create a partition on a fast 500gb and install windows and games on that and storage on other partition.

Yes... a good point about partitioning large hard drives.

The only reason I have a second drive, is to store my Acronis back-ups on. So if the main drive fails, I can restore the HD image from the second drive. Being paranoid, I also back-up to DVD as well.

lol, you have that o.d.d or whatever that compulsive disorder is LOL:p

i have a raptor 74gb for O.S, 750gb for storage and 500gb for storage. those are full btw:P

£125 for wd 750gb is tasty, its virtually silent and sooo quick, worth every penny:) love my raptor too.

2 drives are better. And you dont need Raptors or raid to benefit.

The beginning of the disk is the fastest part. You want your OS and your games to be quick loading. If your OS is installed first, then its at the beginning of the disk so its fast, then your game loading wont be as fast, even if they are installed on their own 'games' partition.

Best to get 2 disks... Also for backup purposes, bung your MP3s and family photo etc (the stuff you'd hate to lose) on both disks.

Also, have you ever unrarred/unzipped something on a single disk and its takes forever? Well set your winrar temp file folder to a different disk and it flys along.

i am currently using a 500gb samsung for my data storage, and then another 120 and a 160 for day to day installs and stuff. Today im going to rectify that and get the WD 750gb drive and make one 50gb partition for my boot and installs (i dont tend to have much installed) one 200gb partition for my immediate downloads (before sorting) and documents and ***** and then the 500gb left will be a copy of everything that is on my current 500gb samsung as an internal bckup.

Then i'll be backing up anything actually important (email, documents etc) on the 500gb NAS that my family share which itself backs up to another external HD. excessive? yes. but after we just lost 300gbs worth of a dearly departeds pictures music and other stuff we dont want to be caught again. and with the prices of drives as they are, there is no excuse.

Yup, I have photos and MP3 backed up one 2 different PCs at home, and also my PC at work (incase my house burns down :)

In my experience performance (64bit Vista) under RAID 0 is actually a far more noticeable improvement than going from 2GB to 4GB RAM with only a single drive. :)
