Hey guys, Well im in abit of a muddle, for awhile now ive been playing around with i7 build ideas my first build was this...

I was pretty happy with it, until a guild member told me i could save money if i changed my build to this...

Now his build does make a lot of sense and I could easily see myself getting this build instead of build #1. The DVDRW is my only weak area that im not too gen'd up on. And should i change the ram to the Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel (TR3X6G1600C8G)? Also change to a 750w PSU (be Quiet) instead of the 650 just incase i decide i want to sli my card in the future?

What do you guys think? Your input ofc is very very welcome!

Also should I get a sound card aswell? ive had X-Fi in the past, was impressed but ive heard good thingd about the Asus cards

IMHO get this optical drive (fast, quiet, good burning), this RAM, this CPU (£1 extra for 2 years warrenty and a free game is a bargain).

For the mobo- the Gigabyte UD5 is awesome - well worth the extra paper.

For HDD I would suggest this as an alternative, but the F1 is good too.

The noctua is a much quieter cooler, but the Titan is slighly better performing - choose the one which means more to you.

650 W PSU is fine for that setup - bump it up to 750W if you plan on going multi-GPU.

Finally, graphics - this XFX 4890 is a ridiculous price at the moment and you should be able to overclock it up to 950MHz core without too many problems. Use the money saved to get an better cooler like this so it doesn't sound like a 747 taking off.

The drive i will change to, The ram im not sure aint timings everything? CPU, i didnt see untill you said cheers will change to that :D. Im going to stick with the samsung HDD, get a SSD once they get cheaper and better. CPU cooler, i was looking at the noctua and i do need quiet. I wont be overclocking tbh. Also what benefits are there changing to the UD5 mobo honestly? Will probs get the 750w, and finally GFX card... I was set on the 4890 but Ive been convinced the 285 is worth the money!

Oh also i will be running Windows server 2008 till win 7 comes out with no bugs :D

the common and massively overwhelming consensus is that the 285 is DEFINITELY NOT good value for money compared to cards like the 260/275/4870/4890

accelero twin turbo isnt great for this card

i tried it and it cant handle the heat output from the 4890

edit: if your not bothered about looks get HAF ive seen one in person i was well impressed by just the easyness to use and the airflow is treamendous:D

You could change your ram to the Patriot Viper and change the case to a Silverstone Fortress unless you're dead set on the HAF. The corsair hx750 is also slightly cheaper but not in stock yet.

Thanks for the heads up there, and apologies for the misinformation crang. I saw they added the 4890 to the supported list - I guess it isn't quite up to the task.
