2 interviews - what would u do?

Help! I have applied for 2 jobs that are specific to my masters in computer forensics, 1 is with the police and the other is for a private company. I have the police interview 2morro and they have shortlisted it down to me and one other person (so its 50/50). However, the 2nd interview is on the 18th and is my preferred employer outta the 2. IF i get offered the police job - what do I do about the 2nd interview with the private company? It is not as much salarywise but the manager and I have spoken in depth about what he expects of me and has laid out the professional development plan and what should happen for me over the next 3 years if I work for them. The police is a good employer with initially more money to start with but they have not discussed any professional development with me and what goals I can expect to achieve unlike the private company has. I cant expect the police to hang on 10 days till I hear about the private company interview so what should I do if offered the job?

Police position:

- better salary initially than private company
- good employer (being government so will never go bankrupt!)
- no idea of scope for promotion/advancement
- no discussion of professional development
- manager came across as a bit of a div and hard to talk to

Private company position:

- initially lower salary but after 12 months will be more than the police job
- manager has gone out of his way to contact me personally
- has laid out a professional development plan for the next 3 years minimum
- manager seems really genuine and pleasant to talk to

I don't want to assume i will get either job but the private company appeals to me more. Therefore, how should I handle the police job if they offer it to me before I know if I get the private one?
 
usually you don't have to give a reply straight away, ask if you can have a week to think it over.

The other option is take police then quit straight away if you get the other job.
 
Isn't asking for a week too long tho? One would assume that I should give them an answer on Monday latest therefore giving me the whole weekend to decide.
 
I worked in the IS department for Sussex Police for a year or so and it was pretty good, loads of nice people and plenty of money being thrown around. I decided to leave to join the NHS though as there was more scope for career development within their IT structure...

It was cool flashing my badge to people in police stations and police property though, haha :p

EDIT: I also got to go round the backends of Gatwick airport, a WW3 nuclear bunker in the middle of nowhere, and all sorts of other stuff. Working for the police will always be interesting.

i really want the private job but murphies law dictates that i will get the police one, turn them down then mess up the private interview and then be without either!!!
 
Both jobs mean relocating to another part of the country but that is something I am willing to do for the right job which both of these are.
 
The police requires security vetting so am using this as an excuse to draw the process out having not completed my forms yet - I am going to tell them that I am waiting for some further information before I can hand them in so I get all the details correct before I hand it in - I just hope they accept my BS.
 
Plus you've probably got more chance of getting shot being a copper than with a private firm.



Less chance of backhanders though!
 
go for the police interview when they get back to u which is not normally straight away anyhow u can accept, i assume u are not expected to start imediatley if so then do it and just get the 18th off work, say u are busy already and then see how the next interview goes, if u get that job then quit with police and say its not what u thought it would be like and go with the job u liked.
 
Thinkin about it most people need to work notice so cant see the police job as startin for at least 2 weeks to a month away which should see me straight for the 2nd interview on the 18th. I jus hope that none of em read this thread (as if lol :p )

Alty if you didn't want the police job why don't you just say, YOU'VE WASTED MY TIME, YOU CAN FORGET ABOUT YOUR SECOND INTERVIEW NOW
