Ok i need a new pc and i have narrowed it down to:
Athlon x3 435---ASROCK M3A785GM-LE/128M-2gb-- ddr3 1066mhz
or
Phenom x4 9950---MSI 785GTM-E45----2gb ddr2 800
The second option is cheaper but i dont mind paying the extra for the AM3 one if it is going to be better.
Thanks guys

If you look at this comparison, the X3 is marginally faster in games and but the phenom 1 quad core is a bit faster in other programs.

I would suggest going for the Athlon II X3 over the phenom 1. It is a newer tech chip, much cooler and will overclock better. Also, you will be using the AM3 platforms - so you may be able to do a Bulldozer drop-in CPU upgrade at some point in the future when you feel like you need an upgrade.

Out of interest, how much are looking to pay for the Phenom 9950 and Athlon II X3 435? Also, you mentioned some games before, will gaming be the primary role of this PC?

Andi....Can get the 9950 for about £30 and the Athlon is £60 and gaming will be only Company of Heroes and also cod 4 if possible.
Stulid....Not really im sure the 785g is a decent graphics card for how much the motherboard is and for the game (s) i want to play.

Ah, thats a pretty sweet price for the Phenom 1, I would go for that. As you can see in that benchmark - games will run fine with that CPU. However, I would strongly suggest you spend the money you save towards a discrete graphics card.

If you look at these reviews [1][2][3], you will see that with the 785G modern games are only playable at very low resolutions and detail settings. The same can be said for any integrated graphics setup, for the games and resolution you mention above then you really want a half-decent discrete graphics card.

dont get your hopes up- http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2010/05/24/amd-880g-graphics-performance-review/4

thats a newer chipset again. and its still only good for low resolution and settings.

not sure of the total cost of the cpu, motherboard and ram, but some dude is selling this for £200 http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18156417

Oh :(....Well i can always grab a 8800gt or similar will that be ok?
Ok so if i go for the first Phenom i will get a cheaper motherboard and a discrete gfx and im good to go?

very good price for that phenom 1, at the end of the day though its old tech. Its hotter and doesnt overlclock as good. If you're aiming for as much bang for buck as possible then go for the phenom I, but the am3 setup will be more future proof IMO.

I fancy boys....I wont be overclocking and yeh i am aiming for that tbh....Well i was thinking go am2+ mobo but has support for am3? then i can upgrade if need be :)
Thanks stulid i saw that but he wont post and i dont need all that stuff tbh so probs easier to get what i am going for atm

I have decided to go with a Athlon dual core with a 780g mobo for the moment until my mate gets the phenom sorted then it will go with the 780g and i will also be on the look out for a 8800gt or something
