2 sites, 2 internet connections, one seamless network?

Have you started to archieve yet? I'm not laughing but even on a 30mb vonnection I think depends how many ppl is accessing it may cause issues.

Why not local storage and a local AD?

My impression is that he has one computer to start off with maybe be two.

I'd love to archive, but our customers come often back to us and as we're providing web based services, we need access to the most recent versions of files for all of the clients.

However, that does leave us with a number of historic customers and older files that sit around on the server, unfortunately, managing the archiving of files for 1500+ clients (may be as many as 2000+ by the end of next year) is a nightmare I haven't comptemplated as of yet; what with being an overworked systems admin/webserver admin/security analyst and assessor/risk analyst and assessor/PC builder/whatever else gets thrown my way like quality assurance helping out the newbies with IE CSS bugs etc.

oh my... 7TB of documents? ;)

Just internal? ;) lol

Lol.
Yes, I rip all my dvds (I also have a lot of tv series) to h.264 and play on the PS3. Oh, and its all redundant, with space for a drive failure and keep the redundancy going while I purchase a replacement drive.
Anyway! It basically seems a shame to have a seperate system for the business side of it, when I have an adequate system in place for managing files!
I think I will give dropbox a go, and see how it goes. My move probably will not be for another 3 weeks or so, so it gives me plenty of 'tinker time'.

How many users mate and how much space do you require?

Just one for now, but with 2 pcs at the unit.
Space wise, I have around 3gb in the business shares, but around 2gb of that are product photos, original ones which are stupidly high res! I have been using dropbox, and it is very easy. How safe is the data against loss etc? Any horror stories?

This is interesting as we're looking at doing something similar. All our data is on a hired server in london and we access it I guess via VPN in our region office.

We only have a 6mbps down and 1mbps upstream. It seems to work ok.

Dropbox would be horrible to use, for constantly accessing, amending and emailing files.

Why not a local server with daily backup then?

That would be my suggestion. It's nice saying you have the hardware at home for the storage of data but what if you have person(s) working in the unit and you have a situation like today where there is a nationwide issue with your Internet provider.

Main storage at the work location then if required factor in some replication/backup to home.

I would consider the same speed Internet at both ends though, nothing worse than getting restricted by the upload on a slow cnnection.

I would also opt for a local server. It doesn't even need to be a Server OS. You can set up nightly backups to replicate data back home [how practical that would be over a bog standard ADSL connection I don't know, but depends on size of files and how much you do in a day!].

Speed of connection may make a cloud service like DropBox not entirely great either. What happens if you need to amend a file that is still being synced with the cloud? What if you need a file that hasn't synced from another location? [I rarely use DropBox, so there may be some clever answers to those I am not aware of! :p].

Personally, I would probably backup to tape or external HDDs. Alternating so you can take one home - in case anything happens at the unit.
