I now have had 2 CPUs (i7 7800X Skylake-X) that have died in an identical way.

The first one died while waking from sleep in windows. This was in October.

Now I have had the replacement also die in a similar way, I woke it from windows while it was in S3 sleep and its also died.. it just turns on the fans and "00" is showing on the Debug LED.

When the first one died I changed both the CPU and motherboard.

No overclock, both on stock and default settings.

Now the replacement has died. What could be the problem ?

What PSU do you have?

Purely speculation on my part but it sounds like a power delivery issue steeming from faulty vrms or chocks. If your CPU isn't being supplied with clean 12v of power that would significantly damage your hardware overtime.

Take a look at your motherboard and see if there are any damaged chocks around the CPU. It may also be the PSU but in that case your video card would be effected as well.

Gonna check for scorch/burn marks.

Although its new, do you think I should RMA the power supply ?

Its the only common thing left in the system.

I'm getting nervous and don't want a 3rd CPU to die.

The CPU should be protected from your PSU wanting to fry it. Which leads me to suspect the motherboard.

As said, check for scorch marks and check to see if it's a known issue with your motherboard. Could be the motherboard is supplying too much to the CPU on wake and frying it for example.

I would be looking to replace the motherboard and PSU whilst you wait for the RMA if i'm honest.

What actual board is it?? What memory etc etc??

CPU: i7 7800X
Motherboard: MSI X299 SLI PLUS
PSU: Seasonic FOCUS+ Gold 650 watt.
RAM: Vengeance DDR4 LPX 3000Mhz.

Currently showing EZDEBUG white LED on CPU. No post.

CPU looks OK?:

Do you have liquid metal on the bottom of the cpu?? Seems a lot of silver.

Are you setting sa and io manually if not what volts is the board pushing??

It could be a scorch mark. I dont think its TIM.

I didnt set the CPU SA or IO, they were at default value.

The CPU is dead and I dont have a spare to test the board with,

In the video below, there is some mention that the gold pads develop small black contact spots after use, but not quite like in your picture:

Seems like a lot of exposed gold. Not sure if it the picture but it looks like a manufacturing problem.

there's a couple more of them going by the picture, although not as clear/large. that's definitely not right. Is there any corresponding marks on the socket?

That is what I was referencing, it's hard to tell without looking at it in person but it definitely shouldn't be there.
Josh.
