20 Abandoned Cities from Around the World: Deserted Towns and Other Derelict Places

Fascinating read, thanks. :)

Pripiyat's definitely one for later inclusion in this thread, due to the nature of it's abandonment. The morning after the Chernobyl reactor incident people were litterally bundled out of their homes by Soviet authorities in the middle of breakfast, with dishes still laid out on kitchen tables, and newspaper's dated the day after the accident still open on the stories the former occupants were reading when Police and Interior Ministry troops came battering on their apartment doors.

Wonder if I could buy some property there, who I would need to talk to or if I could just turn up and renovate :D

Which one? The Kowloon Walled City would be a bit of an issue since it was demolished and made into a park but for most of the rest I suspect you could if you've got the cash and can contact the right people. I'd maybe not choose the asbestos mining town personally but maybe I'm just being picky. :)

I'm going to hazard a guess that Famagusta in Cyprus will pop up in here at some point?

Have seen it so many times, kinda scary that the washing is still hung on the lines in peoples back garden. Theres also an interesting read behind why the norther part of Cyprus is how it is - Whos fault was it, Turkish, Cypriots - or the US? Who knows the full story. However, it is interesting.
