20 Fenchurch Street (AKA The Walkie Talkie)

London has never had a decent looking building, and the skyline is laughable for such a large and important city. Miles and miles behind Manhattan.

The ground under London wasn't suitable for tall heavy buildings. It is only with modern (and much more expensive) foundations that we can start building these tall towers. On top of that the streets would be horrible with London's narrow roads and tall buildings blocking out all the sun and causing harsh winds.

I think when a new city skyline is being built anything that stands by itself without accompanying buildings looks off, once it gets more dense I think it will collectively look nicer.

By new I mean relatively, compared to others.

Not to mention its infrastructure can't cope as it is, the last thing London needs is more high-density office buildings.

I quite like it - I think there are far worse looking buildings in The City - for example Tower 42 looks sodding awful.

The bar up the top is pretty nice too, although remember to sell your first born before you get a round in.

yeah tis designed to look like the natwest logo from above... maybe it was impressive back in the day but now it is surrounded by much more modern buildings it just looks lame...

even the bar is a bit redundant now - I mean say you take a girl for a few cocktails up there, as she looks out at the view and she can see the people eating and drinking at sushi samba at the top of the herron tower or in the bar at the top of the gherkin... or over at the sky garden on top of the walkie talkie... all much more impressive buildings

tis like turning up for a valentines date with just a card and seeing bunch of other couples nearby carrying roses

anyway my favorite building is the Lloyds one - built around the same time as the natwest building yet after 30 years it still looks impressive next to the modern buildings:

dunno about that... prefer the few interesting skyscrapers over a big cluster of mostly boring block shaped one...

A blot on the landscape. The thing is hideous, pull it down and start again.

It cost hundreds of millions to build.... Sure lets just knock it down and spend about £500m redoing it.

I currently work on a project a few doors down from the walkie talkie. I think it looks great. All new tall buildings like the insanely massive Middle East 'I've got a bigger penis than you buildings' that keep trying to top each other all look like big needles or 'shards.' The walkie talkie goes against the architectural norm and is top heavy; it's a great bit of engineering.

Leave it, but revoke the listed status from Trellick Tower and tear that ugly thing down. As well as all the other high rise flats dotted around London.

Horrible buildings.

Why do horrific buildings like that ever get listed?

That's ****ing awful.

From the view in my office I think looks okay.

It's quirky. I don't want to have to pay to have it ripped down though - I think a few new modern buildings does some good for London. :)

I actually think it looks worse from that view, FF. The Shard looks impressive though.

Do you work just off Embankment, then?

They are still building lots in the City. Here is what it will look like in a few years when a few of the current projects are complete

You can see the 'mini shard' and the monstrosity they are building at Bishopsgate instead of 'The Pinnacle' which never got further than a stump!

I still think that if they'd kept the building more rectangular instead of top heavy, it would have looked absolutely fine.

Also, another picture nabbed from le google:
