20 Minute Game Crash

I have been experiencing some problems with a few games; Battlefield 3 to name one, with an instant game crash between 5 and 30 minutes into playing the game. There are no errors other than '<game> has stopped working' and then closes to the desktop. I assumed it could be a driver issue, so I reinstalled windows fresh on a new HDD with only essential drivers; with exactly the same crash. So a hardware fault. I tested the RAM by removing all but one stick, same crash, and running a memory test, no faults. GPU? I borrowed a friends GTX 660 and the same issue prevailed. I did some research and found it could be a power issue, so I put my CPU back to stock speeds (3.8GHz) booted the game, and have been able to play with no problems whatsoever. I obviously don't want to keep my cup like this, as it previously had a stable overlock from SCAN of 4.5GHz. Does this mean I need to upgrade my power supply to handle the overlock?

Note - there are no overheating issues, or spikes on anything that can be monitored before the crash.

Thanks

Parts -
i5 3570k @4.5GHz
GTX 460 1gb
9x120mm fans with fan controller (Still crashes when off)
16gb Corsair Vengence
Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit)

You could also download Hardware monitor and look at your voltages as it could be the PSU not being able to supply the required power.

If I found the voltages of the different components, how can this tell me if the PSU is overloaded?

Also I don't really want to alter the OC settings as they are said to be stable by SCAN.

One of those difficult problems. Certainly not the wattage, although i'd say its close.

Is buying a new one too much to stomach if it doest resolve your problem?

Doubt this problem would be from mobo or cpu. Could be RAM....run memtest.

I would cope with only 3.8GHz until I upgrade the GPU in September anyway, maybe go 1kW to be safe?

I ran memtest and there are no problems reported

I'll be sure to check event viewer tomorrow as soon as I'm back at my PC, anything in particular I should be looking out for?

Yeah CPU parity 19 error or warnings, just means you need more CPU voltage to eliminate them and stop games crashing to desktop. Hence crashes at 4.5ghz and non at stock,if it was psu the whole pc would shut off

It can still pass prime95 and still crash in games due to not enough CPU v

Idk how they have overclocked it,with a fixed CPU v or through offset, but eitherway you'll need two to three clicks more CPU v and retest in games till 0 whea errors appear in event viewer, then your truly game stable

Agreed Wazza, but its still worth a test to improve our confidence...we don't have a huge amount to go on.

Seems very similair to my experience when clocking my 3570k to 3.5ghz. Despite being p95/ibt stable, bf3 would throw up an error/crash/freeze very quickly. Checked event viewer and whea errors were showing corresponding to the time of the game error. Few notches of vcore cured it. 16gb of ram may also need a bit of a bump in qpi/vtt voltage, will depend on what board the op has and what it's known as on it.
