I picked up a cheap Cambridge Audio A5 amp last year with the intention of getting some floorstanding speakers. I never got round to actually buying them so i thought i'd pick up some up now. What's the best possible option for £200? Are floorstanding the best option for me or would bookshelves be better? I'd rather have some floorstanders but if anyone has any other suggestions i'd be grateful.

TIA ;)

You won't get good pair of new floorstanders for £200. You should be able to get something decent second hand though. It'll get you a new good budget pair of standmounts, but you'll also need speaker stands. I wouldn't spend less than £400 on a pair of floorstanders.

And don't buy Eltax.

I'm afraid I haven't tried anything else, but my Acoustic Energy Evo3 floorstanders are darn good for the cash, about £235.

For a decent pair of floorstanders at £200 your best bet is second-hand from somewhere like a certain auction site.

It might be worth having this moved to "Home Cinema & HiFi", you'll get more replies there.

I personally like Mordaunt-Short.

(Yes, I have a pair of their bookshelf speakers :o )

I'm listening to Queen's Greatest Hits atm through them, sounds very tight! ;)

OK, cheers for the info guys. I'll take a look on the bay but i think i'd rather buy new just to be safe. I certainly can't afford £400 so i might be better off getting some bookshelves. Firstly, any recommendations? Secondly, is it really worth spending £200+ on a set of speakers when they will be powered by a budget amplifier? Is it going to bottleneck the performance of the speakers?

P.S How do i go about getting this thread moved to Home Cinema & Hi-fi?

could always try richer sounds, they normally do some good deals.

always remember what you hear is different to what somebody else hears.

Go to a proper Hi-Fi shop. That shop is just a sales shop, get you to buy something and out of the door. Usually try and flog Eltax or some other brand.

RS are good if you know want you want and know what's quality, but not for the hi-fi noob. They just give "advice" to sell items.

yeah sorry i forgot, RS aren't a Hi-Fi store :D

the point i was making, is that RS usually do cheap deals, they have auditioning rooms so you can hear what you want 1st, at least they do @ Newcastle.

I've had a quick look on RS but as i'm not too sure what i'm looking for i don't want to end up spending £200 on a pair of crappy speakers.

What about Mission's?

Usually do a good budget range.

I've had my M74's for about 5-6 years, never let my down, still class today.

M52's, M33i's can be had under £200

My friend picked up M34i's which are usually about £270 for under £200 over a year ago in a shop in Newcastle, so bargains are out there and not just on the net.

There's good things been said about Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo 3s - have a shop around 2nd hand for a pair - a pair of them and a pair of Evo 2s went recently for £205 for the lot.
