200 for new gpu

question, (and apologies as it has probably been asked & answered 1000's of times before)

running i5 750 and 5770 vapor-x gpu. obviously both aging a bit now, mainly the gpu.

so what ya'll think best bet would be for 200 quid-haven't really kept an eye on amd's recent offerings.

If you can spare the little extra: R9 280X or GTX770.

If you can't: HD7950, R9 270X or GTX760.

The top two are well worth the extra mind.

would the R9 280X not be in risk of being bottle necked by my cpu

i5 750 is not that bad. overclock is a little and get yourself one of these
nothing matches that for performance anywhere near that price and your i5 has enough grunt to run it just fine.

funny had actually been looking at that 7950.

the cpu actually overclocks quite well. think i've had it as high as 3.8 stable if my memory serves me correctly did have it as high as 4.2 but could never get it stable.

about 40/50 quid difference in the price in the 2 once you factor in the free games with the 7950, so leaning heavily towards that.....

but am i missing out anything with the newer tech amd cards? any new grond breaking developments with them, that's worth the extra?

That's a nice card but for an extra £30 or so I would much rather have an R9 280x and the performance difference would be worth it.

Though if £200 really is the limit then the 7950 is the next best thing.

Definitely try spend the bit extra for 770/280x as others stated and yeah 3.8ghz should be fine with the card.(only if SLI/CF of either you will see bottleneck even at 3.8ghz quite badly)

Get this one, the Toxic is a nice card but a bit much at £280.

The Toxic is a great card but 40% over budget. If you can afford that, it's the 280X to have but if not the Sapphire above will be spot on.

[edit] Just to add the GTX770s are also a good option, similar price and performance to the 280X. It totally comes down to if you prefer the green or red team.

Agreed, but i would also add that the 770 only has 2GB of vRam vs 3GB on the 280X.

yea toxic is a bit out of my league unfortunately......

the 280x @ £227 just about scrapes in once 1 add the postage to NI so think that might be my best option

also, and maybe should have stated this at the start but i assume a 650w corsair tx would be fine running ny of the above?

The TX 650 is more than enough, yes

Over 1080p or highly modded games, even then he'd need a modern CPU to stop the bottleneck at 1440p etc, a 770 for under £200 after the sale of games would be my choice, both are just rebrands of the 7970/680 though so a bit meh.

Interesting. I'm looking at an R280X or GTX770 for myself next month, to drive a 2560x1440 screen. The 280X is the much smarter choice then?

I didn't realise it made that much of a difference unless talking multi monitor setups.

At that rez then the 280X as some games will need the extra VRAM. Any single card will struggle a bit in new and upcoming games though at 1440p if you want max settings.
