Hey all,

Looking for a graphics card to replace my senile and dying HD 6770 and looking to spent around the £200 mark, possibly stretching to £220 at the most.

Whats the best I can get in this price bracket?

Cheers

As long as your CPU isn't ancient, the HIS 7950 is a great buy. But if you're willing to go to £220, you could creep up a tiny bit to the amazingly priced Asus 7970 (£234).

Well, if you're planning on upgrading your board/CPU soon, the 7950 or 7970 is still a good idea given their great prices. But you will need to upgrade to take advantage of them -- in the meantime some games will give a massive boost over your 6770, others not so much.

That was originally the plan however the dying graphics card has made me change priority a little. Is there a significant difference between AMD/Nvidia performance around the £200 mark?

The 7950 and 670 are quite close (both £180-£200), but the 7950 has the edge (as well as better memory specs). The 7970 though cannot be beaten, it's a brilliant performer and £234 is just stupid money, these were going for £350 a couple of months ago.

Some would recommend a card like a 7850 for now -- which would be an improvement, but when you come to upgrade your CPU/board, you'll already have a brilliant graphics card, and you'd probably want to upgrade your GPU if you had the 7850.

3.6 is as far as I've managed to go with reasonable temps and stability, 3.8 got a bit hot. PSU is fine Cooler Master Silent Pro 700W, overkill I know but it was on a big sale.

I dont want to hijack the thread but i'm in much the same position as the OP. My rig is in my sig apart from my monitor which is a 22" 1600x1050 Dell.

Would the Asus 7970 be overkill for my monitors res? The games i'll mostly be playing over the next year or so will be Rome 2 (when it gets fixed). GTA V and probably BF4.

Cheers.

Probably better off getting a 7950. But if you do plan to upgrade to a 1080p monitor eventually then a 7970/50 will be very well suited. You'll be able to max out any games with ease at 1050p with either a 7950 or a 7970. You'll be fine with your cpu as well. Just overclock it to 4.5ghz.
