£200 Graphics Card

I dont want to hijack the thread but i'm in much the same position as the OP. My rig is in my sig apart from my monitor which is a 22" 1600x1050 Dell.

Would the Asus 7970 be overkill for my monitors res? The games i'll mostly be playing over the next year or so will be Rome 2 (when it gets fixed). GTA V and probably BF4.

Cheers.

At the current price, not really. You'd be able to max out some games that you wouldn't be able to at 1080p (a 7970 isn't enough at 1080p any more for the most demanding games).

edit: I agree with Matt, but given how cheap the 7970 is, I'd just get that over the 7950.

Hmmmmm. So a 7970 isn't somewhat future proof with a 1080p screen?

To be honest though, if i buy a GFX card now i wouldn't be able to upgrade to a 1080p screen for a good 12 to 18 months.

My line of thinking was 1050p - 7950, 1080p - 7970.

A 7970 will run most things at 1080p with ease at highest settings. On some games like crysis you might have to run 2/4x AA instead of 8. But a 7970 will run 1080p well for a long while yet.

Yeah that all makes sense. I just think i'd be silly buying a 7950 and then a 1080p monitor in a year or so.

Yes - a 7970 is fine for a 1080p screen in general. But the latest most demanding games are needing something higher for max settings.

Would adding a 2nd 460 to run SLI make any kind of sense as cost effective short term upgrade? There's a couple of identical cards to mind on ebay at the moment, no idea what kind of price they'll go for though.

No real kind of sense to me. 7970/50 will stomp all over any 460 xfire setup.
