2000 grit

you really don't need to go that high anyway, unless you are obsessed with getting a mirror finish on a component you can never see???
 
A quick search found a few places selling lapping kits. After 1000 grit the ones I found changed to "microns", guessing thats just another form of measurment? But one said its finest was equivalent to 1800 grit, that not close enough?

Its just used to get the top of the cpu as smooth as possible. The higher the grit rating the smoother the paper. Start with a low grit rating (400 or so) and work your way to the higher ones such as 2000

Thanks for that reading through it now, I'm very interested now mite give it a go.

I'm assuming thats loads of risks though ?

You dont need 2000 grit when lapping, upto 1200 is adequate, as long as the suerfaces are flat, thats the main thing. Anything higher is just bling thats never gonna be seen.
 
If you only have 1200/1500 grit and want a finer grade, just rub two sheets together and you will find that it will give you a better finish.

2000 grit as many mention above is for bling only and is often counter productive to your needs (getting the lowest CPU temp and best OC possible).

I’ll explain: The reason we use thermal compounds like AS5 is to increase the surface area that your CPU and heatsink conducts heat. It does this by filling in the micro lines and holes in the CPU and heatsink to make them flat.

If you’ve sanded your CPU and heat sink to both mirror finishes and for the sake of argument they are both as close to perfectly flat as possible. You then place your thermal compound on as thinly as possible or using the dot/line method. The thermal compound will not squeeze into tiny micro gaps and holes, as there are none. As a result your thermal compound will often act as a insulator and sit between your CPU and heatsink. So rather than help your OC, over polishing can lead to higher temps.
