I haven't been keeping up with computers and the various advances for the last year or so, so I was wondering if anyone could help me with figuring out a decent rig for about £2000.

This includes a monitor and a case (I am leaving my old setup at home for my sister to use :)). I would like a Lian-Li PC-60 as I have seen a couple of these and they are very nice and some water cooling to go along with it (I'm not fussed if it is just a standard kit, I must admit I know hardly anything about it but am interested in it because it is quiet, overclocking isn't vital but I wouldn't mind :)). Other than that... go mad :D.

Oh and it's mostly going to be for gaming and maybe some folding as well :).

I must admit the main reason for wanting water cooling is because I have been looking at the watercooled pc gallery and they look cool :). That and they are quieter :D. Tah btw!

Just a quick question about the two graphics cards (this is one of the things I don't understand) don't they have to be the same for SLI or does it not make a difference?

SLi - nvidia mulit-card solution. basically with SLi you are suposed to run two exactly the same cards. if you run two different cards then the better one will run at the same speed as the slower one. but you can just buy 2x7800GTX or what ever. however with crossfire you must have a standard X1900XT(X) which is the slave card and a Master card. SLi is for nvidia cards and Crossfire is for ATi cards.

and if you think water cooling looks uber, then maybe a vapochill solution maybe spec'ed up

i think SLI is considered to be better on the whole but i spec'd crossfire X1900's becuase they are so damn cheap atm! :p but you could go with some SLi 7900GTXs ;)

now that is a spec.. maybe drop it to a FX55-57 and even the price up by that?

edit: didnt realise he needed a monitor - drop it to AMD 4000 if its cheaper, or around a x2 3800-4400...if its cheaper that way, and add an OcUK Monitor? hehe

this is probally one of the best spec me up threads ive ever participated in

if you thought water cooling was cool.. think again  vapochill is known as Phase cooling i belive and i have absolutely no idea what it is or how it works.. all i know is that its the best. you got a nice selection of overclockable parts as well. may consider dropping the 7900 to the standard version as you would be able to clock that to hell on phase and getting some G.Skill memory as that will overclock like a beast.

I do have a Dell 1905FP but it is on its way out now, it has green lines that run down it vertically which is a shame :(.

I hadn't considered a vapochill unit though and I wouldn't be getting my nice Lian-Li case... but how much can you overclock by with one of those things. Wouldn't I loose out by loosing the dual gfx cards?

Think I will stick with the Lian-Li. I'm vain :D.

IMO 2 gfx cards are a complete waste of money. Gfx cards are updated every 6-9 months so you're just better off buying a new one each year. With a 2k budget you should at least get an opty 175 or a 4400+.

This still leaves you change to get water cooling if you want but, like it's mentioned above it's not really necessary. The opty I specced should get to 2.7-3ghz on air cooling.

BTW if you're wondering why there are 4 HDD's in the spec, this will enable you to raid0+1 and mirror your std drive. This makes the setup faster, cheaper and more reliable than Raptors.

Drop the PC-60s for a PC-7+
The 7+ doesn't have a removable motherboard tray but it does have 2x120mm fans as opposed to the 80mms in the 60 series. The 7+ is the better case.
Also drop the Creative Fatality for the lower standard Extreme version... unless you really want the breakout box.
Id also go for the Opty 170 or the X2 4400+ and overclock either.
