The front sprocket retaining nut likes to come undone on these, which can cause quite a lot of damage to the gearbox housing. 2nd gear is also a common failing, the dogs can wear to the point that it's almost impossible to keep it in gear.
I suffered this on my 2000, take the bike for a ride and take it all the way through the revs in 1st & 2nd gear with the throttle wide open. If it doesn't shift into second when high in the revs in 1st and or slips out of gear when high up in 2nd it's gone. Mine had 11000 miles on it when I bought it and was already suffering it.
I actually suggested the B1H to my mate as well but the problem is that his budget is £2000 and B1H's seem to start at around the £2500 mark. He doesn't like the Ninjas that came before the B1H.
Should he be considering the K1/K2 Gixxer 600 as well? How does it compare to the R6 and again any issues to look for?
Mechanically the GSXR's are pretty tough, but the finish on Suzukis isn't the best so look out for corroded fasteners, chipped paint etc. The GSX-R is slightly more powerful than the R6, with a less peaky power delivery which makes a better bike for the road.
Also look out for excessive amounts of anodised bolt-on tat, revoltingly coloured screens and miniscule exhaust cans
