Hello everyone,

I've given up on the idea of a van/4x4 (previous thread a while ago), so....

I've found a lovely 2004 Mondeo Zetec S 2.5 V6, which I am going to go have a look at on the weekend. Just a few questions for the Mondeo experts on here.

How is the engine maintanence wise? Any known issues? How are servicing costs compared to a run of the mill 2.0?

I'm not too bothered about the mpg figures (Parkers has it at 28, I assume combined cycle), so more out of curiousity, how does it do on motorway/out of town driving?

Anything in specific I should be looking at when inspecting it? The car has under 40,000 miles and has had two previous owners.

Any other comments?

Thanks ahead of time!

My father has one but I don't know a lot about running costs.

I do know that a yearly service is more expensive than other Mondeo's, Ford have fixed prices for their cars but the 2.5L V6 is an exception.

It is a very nice engine though, he has automatic gearbox with manual changes possible on the steering wheel and the gear stick, very nice.

There's one issue with the IMRC/secondaries that is relatively common, basically just check there's a reasonable surge of power at 3-3.5k rpm, have a search here for some details :). Servicing is fairly average and there's no cambelt to change. Last service on mine ('major' one, plugs, filters etc.) was £300 at my local independent but also included a MOT, front ARB droplinks and new handbrake cables.

Most of my previous commute was out of town NSL roads with a few 40 areas, usually 32/33 mpg. The one longer trip I've done mostly motorway and A roads with some town driving returned 31.5mpg, though I do have a slightly longer 5th gear than normal in my ST200. Short (cold engine) trips round town will be approx. mid-20s if not worse.

Is it the same duratec 2.5 in the MK3 as the MK2 if so, the HG are prone to go,mainly down to crappy water pump they used.

same V6 duratec as the mk2 but they have the revised water pump as standard which isn't prone to breaking up like the first one was. Rear subframe bush failure is quite common it wont handle as well and most have a knocking noise from the rear of the car. aprat from that they are quite good :)

For 2004 they're pretty old engines, and i'd be looking at another engine TBH, TDCI even....

the V6 duratec first went into prodcution in 1994 so the orignal design is about 10yrs old its had a few revisions since then and is used in jaguars, mazdas and several other cars in one form or another. it won engine of the year award several times. so what has the age of the original design got to do with it

Not digging it too much mate - i've got one - but it's not exceptionally fast (<4.5kRevs) , not great mpg, and not very reliable things. I'm not saying it's bad, but its not got the reliability reputation behind it that something like the zetec has.

Thanks again for the input.

I am now the proud new owner of a 53 plate V6 Zetec S Mondeo. :)
Went to see the car yesterday, and gave it a proper looking over and test drive. The seller was about as good as you could ask for- he kept the car in mint condition and running sweetly.

Specs- 2004 Ford Mondeo Zetec S 2.5 V6
Half leather, 31,000miles, properly serviced, MOT and tax well into next summer.

The red isn't quite as red as that pic makes out, but it is still RED. :)

The wheels are standard. I quite like them too.
