What realistically should you be looking out for when buying one with around 50-60k on the clock

Obviously signs of clutch slip i've also heard about listening for a knocking coming from the steering rack.

Anything else i should be looking out for specific to CTR's

thanks in advance for any help.

EP3

Rust, smoke in VTEC, check the body panels all match up as 1/2 of these cars have ended up in a wall.

things to look at off the list I compiled from reading around before I got mine.

oil level - needs to be on the maximum, running on low oil is a bad idea with these.

check the calipers, look at the state of them, rears are prone to getting rusty.

1st to 2nd can crunch when the car is cold. let it warm up and make sure you check this.

check vtec switchover, it needs to change over at around 5.8k if it doesn't, or there is a massive dip in the changeover then you will notice it.

vtec works on oil pressure so if there is not enough oil then vtec wont work properly

make sure you take it through to red line slowly.
go to about 30 in 2nd and accelerate slowly up to 50, this should highlight any issues.

I drove one that simply felt awful when doing this so it is worth it on the test drive.

ask them when the valve clearances were checked if they are due [this depends on mileage]

if you notice a buzzing sound between 3k&4k. this is the drive shaft heat shield
it is an easy fix, you just need to remove it.
maybe use it as a bargaining point and get the price down if it happens on your test drive.

I cant think of anything else off the top of my head, I'm sure someone like MilanoChris could add more to this than myself.

Had mine from 46K and it's currently on 64k. Only issues I've had are

Exhaust heatshield, but this will be noticeable as soon as your on the test drive. A hose clip sorted it on mine and tightned it up.

My clutch makes a little whirr noise when pulling off. It's always been like this, a mechanic says it's nothing to worry about it. Will wait until my clutch goes before replacing it.

The steering rack issue was most common with pre face lifts. 53reg and below. You can tell which are the facelifts by seeing if indicators are on the wing mirrors.

Not had any other problems with it so far.

not going to be for a few months, just trying to find out more about them things that are common to gone wrong and running costs etc etc. They seem to be good engines if looked after well from what i can tell.

how much is it likely to cost to get the valve clearances checked, and also will the timing chain need tensioning around 70k??

I am trying to find out about the timing chain for mine as it's just touching 70k... I hear they're lifelong but I'm wary when the thing revs to over 8 grand lol.

I am due my valve clearances and I think it's gonna be about 100-120, just labour really. I think it will quieten the engine right down as it does sound a little tappety now.

Anyone else had just that job done on it's own and can tell us what they paid?

I don't know if its a similar chain-drive system as the K20A in the DC5, however when I questioned TGM about it a few years ago they say they've never seen a tensioner failure in all their years and nor do they recommend any adjustments to it.

Regular valve clearance adjustments are a good idea though :)

This.

Only time the tensioner or chain will fail is over-rev or oil starvation.

Mine jumped the chain on about 93k it's done over 100k now still solid most reliable car I have ever own, I suffer from rattley heat shield ATM easy fix just I'm a lazy **** atm
