2005 Italian Grand Prix

Remembering Ronnie - why Monza will never forget the super Swede...

The fearsome reputation that the original Monza circuit enjoyed was well deserved - in addition to spectacular racing, the Italian track was also the scene for many horrendous accidents.

In 1928, with the circuit barely six years old, a terrible crash saw both Emilio Materassi and 27 spectators die after his Talbot ploughed into a grandstand. In 1933 no fewer than three top-flight Grand Prix drivers died in a single weekend there (the Czech aristocrat Count Czaykowski, also Italians Giuseppe Campari and Baconin Borzacchini). Both Alberto Ascari and Wolfgang Von Trips were killed there, the Italian while testing in 1955 and the German after a crash with Jim Clark sent him cartwheeling into the crowd, killing himself and 13 spectators.

And by the 1970s, as Formula One racing entered what would prove to be its most dangerous phase, Monza was the scene for more tragedy. First came the death of Jochen Rindt in 1970 after a massive crash at the Parabolica (and while leading the world championship). And then, in 1978, another tragic loss - that of Ronnie Peterson.

Despite being a quiet man when not racing, Ronnie Peterson was one of Formula One racing's most exuberant characters on the track - famous for the spectacular car control that allowed him to drive the fearsomely fast machines of the day considerably beyond their natural limits. The Swedish driver made his mark in spectacular style when he switched from the March to Lotus teams in 1973, winning four Grands Prix that year and three more in 1974. In 1976, driving for March again, he had won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza from an eighth place grid position after a hard-fought race saw him cross the line 2.3 seconds ahead of Clay Regazzoni's Ferrari.

By 1978 Peterson had rejoined the Lotus team and, with the ultra-competitive ‘ground-effect’ Lotus 79, he and team-mate Mario Andretti were dominating the season. By the time they got to Monza, Peterson had already claimed victories in South Africa and Austria and Andretti had taken six wins and was well on the way to taking the drivers' championship.

At Monza, Andretti sat on pole position, but Peterson had been forced to qualify the older Lotus 78 after mechanical gremlins struck, and was down in fifth place. His position in the middle of the pack was to prove disastrous. As the race began, Riccardo Patrese and James Hunt touched as they raced for position in the run up to the first corner - with the Englishman's McLaren then clipping Peterson's car and sending him into a heavy collision with the barriers. Before anything could be done Vittorio Brambilla's Surtees, starting from the back of the pack, had run into the wreckage of Peterson's car, the Lotus instantly bursting into flames.

James Hunt heroically pulled Peterson from the burning car. The Swede's legs were very badly broken and he had suffered from mild burns, but his condition did not appear to be life-threatening. The confused rescue response led to a delay before an ambulance arrived, but then Peterson was quickly transferred to the track's medical centre and then onwards by helicopter to hospital - where x-rays showed his legs were broken in 27 places. Surgeons operated to pin the broken bones back together and, by the evening, he was reportedly stable and facing what would have been a long recovery.

Disaster struck early the following morning when Peterson was killed by an embolism - fat from his damaged legs blocking blood circulation and starving his brain of oxygen. The shock throughout the Formula One world was intensified by Peterson's reportedly stable condition the night before - and the sport fell into mourning for one of its great lost talents.

Yet some good did come from this horrific misfortune. Peterson's death was one of the critical milestones in improving the safety of Formula One racing. Medical intervention was improved under the direction of Professor Sid Watkins, with the principle of the medical car introduced. Marshalling and fire-fighting procedures were also reformed, while the impact protection of cars also benefited from increased emphasis.

The tragedy being, of course, that Peterson never got to benefit from any of the reforms his untimely death brought about.

M.Schumacher ended up going backwards into the tyre wall at the Parabolica. Started to get it very wrong even before the corner.

Kiesa broke down on his out lap in S2

Barrichello had a iffy moment that caused Raikkonen to take evasive action.

Surprises: Williams seem to be going well. Renault seems to be surprisingly far down.

Red Bull Racing AND Red Bull USA in F1 anyone?

Red Bull interested in buying Minardi team

On Saturday Paul Stoddart will meet a delegation from Red Bull to talk about a possible buy-out. Red Bull is interested to take over Minardi and create 'Red Bull Team USA' for the 2006 F1 season.

From a reliable source F1Racing.net was told, "Paul Stoddart will meet Red Bull on Saturday to talk about selling the Minardi Formula One team. It is not clear how far the negotiations are but the interest of Red Bull is very serious."

If Red Bull would buy the Minardi team they would run two F1 teams next season; the current Red Bull team and Red Bull Team USA. Scott Speed has definitely got the biggest chance to become Red Bull Team USA's first driver.

This was a surprise this morning...

Pizzonia replaces Heidfeld at Monza

Nick Heidfeld will not take part in this weekend's Italian Grand Prix at Monza for WilliamsF1.

After driving in Friday's Free Practice sessions yesterday, Nick experienced a strong headache and this morning, together with the team, decided not to continue his on track duties.

Nick crashed whilst testing at the Autodromo di Monza at Lesmo One on August 26th, and will now rest for a few days to recuperate completely in order to return to the cockpit as soon as possible.

Nick said: "I spoke with Gary Hartstein and Sid Watkins this morning and they both recommended that I did not drive."

The team's reserve driver Antonio Pizzonia will take Nick's place for the rest of the weekend. This will be Antonio's 16th Grand Prix. His last race was here, in Monza.

Messed up the first chicaine badly - you would have though he'd know better than that by now. Especially as an Italian..
Nearly lost the rear end coming out of Lesmo2

Not a good lap

Well - if Alonso qualifies hih up - he won't need to be told to move over.. ;)

Love the interview with Ron. Nice to see Ron smile. :D

Essentially from what I gather of ronspeak...

They're a second a lap faster - but have loaded with fuel so they can go longer and take shorter pit stops.

Hinting at possible team orders as well - hmmm...

Hasnt Alesi changed since he was racing, i didnt even recognise him at first until his name was said, Berger is still easily recognisable :)

Looks the same as he always has...

Especially as he's still racing. He's doing pretty well in DTM

Ecclestone expects Raikkonen to join Ferrari

Bernie Ecclestone expects Kimi Raikkonen to join Ferrari for the 2007 season, once Michael Schumacher's contract with Scuderia expires and the German will retire.

Mr Formula One is pretty sure that Michael will not race for any other team in F1 but Ferrari for the rest of his carrier. "Schumacher will end his career at Ferrari," Ecclestone said in Gazzetta dello Sport. "And I'm ready to bet that in 2007 Raikkonen will be in a Ferrari," he concluded.

Honda to own BAR entirely?

Our sources from Monza paddock heard that Honda is keen to purchase the rest of
shares in the BAR team from British American Tobacco (BAT) and own it entirely. If this will happen, the name of the team will be changed into Honda.

BAT formed British American Racing (BAR) in late '90s in order to promote the company's main brands Lucky Strike and 555. However, the new Anti-Tobbacco legislation, introduced this year, affected BAT plans and there is no reason for them to stay in as long as they cannot advertise their products any more.

Honda has already purchased 40% of BAR last year.

This one is funny. :D

FERRARI PRESIDENT HITS OUT AT F1 RULES

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has hit out at the current state of Formula 1 during Ferrari's annual dinner with the press at Monza.

The charismatic Italian claims that one-lap qualifying, the single-tyre rule and the tyre war are ruining the essence of Formula 1 and turning its stars into "taxi drivers".

"Every year the rules change and I do not like this current qualifying format," he said.

"It does nothing for the public and nothing for the TV viewers and it is not good for the sport."

"I am old enough to remember some great qualifying, with all the cars on the track at the same time. I remember for example Ayrton Senna taking pole at the very last second here in Monza.

"That is sport that is life. I want competition on Sunday but also on Saturday."

Montezemolo, whose team has struggled to be competitive on Bridgestone's long-life tyres with this year's regulations, claims that the regulation which demands drivers stay on the same tyres for qualifying and the entire race go against the spirit of F1.

"I do not like to have a race where I have to look after my tyres. If I want to change tyres every lap then I should be allowed to.

"I don't know why I should use the tyres I raced with on Sunday to drive home with on Monday!

"I look forward to having F1 with better overtaking but I still think the key problems in our sport is that we need extreme technology and research."

Bridgestone's rival Michelin re-iterated its opposition to the 2008 regulations which call for F1 to have a single tyre supplier.

The French company is expected to announce its withdrawal from the sport during the Belgian Grand Prix next weekend, but unsurprisingly Montezemolo indicated that he would pleased to see tyre's have less influence on the outcome of a race.

"I do not like a championship where tyres are more important than drivers and cars," he said.

"I am not happy to see the crowds and TV viewing figures going down. I don't like to see boring races and I don't like to see super-boring qualifying.

"I am not happy to see "taxi drivers" saving their tyres for the last 20 laps of a race. I am not happy to see this current Formula 1.

So....when they're continously winning - the rules are prefect and don't need changing...

However - now they're a mid table team - all the rules are crap? Montezemolo....what an arse...
