hi all,

i have a 2008 jetta 2.0 tdi with 90k miles on the clock. it's on a long life service interval and the last service was about 14 months ago.

this morning a message appeared on the dash telling me that a service was due in 14000 miles. seems excessive as it will take me at least 2 years to cover that amount of miles.

so the question is... is it really 14000 miles or has the car simply decided it needs an oil change regardless of the number of miles left before a service is required.

Assuming the servicing works the same as it does with my Skoda. I service my Rapid (which shares the same platform as the Jetta, IIRC) on the fixed schedule which is 10k or 1year, whichever comes first. The other option was 20k or 2years, whichever came first. I imagine the same will be true for your vehicle.

If the last service was 14 months ago I would certainly be looking at an oil change at some point in the next three months. I've never trusted these long life service intervals. For the price of an oil change and peace of mind I would get it done.

Are you sure it doesn't say 1400 miles? That's more like the amount of warning my 03 Passat gives.

Incidentally, that has always been serviced at long life intervals, has 175k miles on it, and still runs great.

I would largely ignore what the car shows and service based on knowledge of the travel and time.

In your case i would certainly do oil soon regardless. What does the service manual say that should be replaced and inspected at this age or mileage?

2 years or 18k with mine, on my millage that will be about every 18 months. Why do people choose to do more i don't know. Oil chemistry has change a lot in recent years, the days of yearly servicing are gone.

Absolutely this. There's always people on forums preaching the "10k or every year", despite most manufacturers adopting long life/variable servicing. Mine's working out around 15k to next service which for me is only a year anyway, but would find it rather inconvenient changing the oil every 8 months or so!

Every 6 months, simple. Oil is so cheap why on earth would you wait years for it to turn into a horrible sludgy gunk diluted with fuel and water and slowly ruining the engine.
I absolutely hate long oil drain intervals with a passion, it's just wrong wrong wrong.

I do about 5k a year, but my car service is every 15k or 1year. Are you guys saying I'm wasting money by doing it yearly?

I have no way to turn the 'Service due' light off on the dash :D

What a load of rubbish, maybe true for old oils. But not at all with modern stuff. Its not just plain oil these days, there are all sorts of additives in them, and can be very specific to each engine. Its not a case of just bunging anything with the right grade the spec is SO important.

And oils tend to be costing over double what they used to with cars holding more of it.
I need about 6.5 litres for mine and its £45 for 5 litres.

always stick to 10k service intervals with the taxis despite recommended being 18k or 20k depending on which car.

difference being our cars get absolutely hammered constant idling a fair bit of stop start work.

normally we alternate oil between oil and filter only and full service. although sometimes it can be as little as 6 weeks between services.

I would say however that I certainly wouldn't go by manufacturer recommendations for belt changes
