2008 Jetta - Service due in 14000 miles

I don't think long life servicing is good for modern engines long term, it was brought in to make servicing cheap for the 3 year lease/PCP/company cars and cover the main warranty period

I wouldn't like to run a car to 100k plus on long life servicing. My wife's Mini went to 19k in 2 years before it's service and the oil was like black treacle and the timing chain was noticeable quieter following the service. I don't think it is a coincidence that earlier revisions of the engine have problems with failing timing chains, I wonder if shorter oil change intervals would have reduced the failures. (If I didn't intend to have a warranty on the car for the full ownership period I would have changed the oil at 10k)

I expect Fox will point out he ran his 530i to 200k+ with long life servicing but that is with a large unstressed NA engine holding 8L of oil and also getting another 10L in top ups between services, a good comparison is my wife's 1.6T which produces similar power/torque but has to cool/lubricate a turbo and deal with increased fuel dilution from direct injection but only holds 3.8L of oil and didn't need any top ups of oil.

When you read about engines with bore scoring/failed turbos/timing chains/oils pumps etc, it would be interesting to compare cars that were on long life service to cars serviced more regularly. With the VAG 2L TFSI in my Golf the cars that were on fixed servicing are far less likely to have oil sludge build up and stretched cam chains where on the long life serviced cars they are common issues past 100k.
