Crysis seems to be the first game released this year that seriously challenges any of the current gen graphics cards, as it cannot be played maxed out at high resolutions.
Will this trend continue with 2008's releases? Or is Crysis just a one off?
It's almost like Nvidia and ATI are playing catch up with no hardware available to meet the power requirements of these near photo realistic masterpieces!
Your thoughts please!
It's quite alarming to think even when nvidias 9 series come out next year, they won't be able to play Crysis at 1920x1080/max settings with a decent frame rate!

I can't actually think of many games that I'm looking forward to next year :-/

Spore doesn't cut it for me :)

If the ati and nvidia battle was a little, tighter, perhaps we would already have seen some much better cards, currently nvidia can just sit back and relax as it stands. Miss the days of ati supremacy :)

The graphics cards are just undergoing a transition from "as many pipes/clocks" as possible to more efficient designs, like CPUs did when the MHz wars stopped and the core wars began!

On a side note, I wish these graphics cards were smaller. My X1800XT is less than an inch away from my hard drives, and it is hardly a powerful card by todays standards :/

quick question. how do companys test games that they made if what 'we' as the customer have won't run it maxed out?

might just be a stupid question

I would have thought in the case of some that have sponsorship deals or close links with either nVidia or ATi, they can join the NDA on new hardware and put it through it's paces on that.

That way it benefits both companies. The game designer gets to see how the code runs on "tomorrow's" hardware, and the graphics card companies get to see how their hardware runs with "tomorrow's" software. :)

Spore - Sounds interesting.
Empire: Total War - Just hope they don't release a 'broken' game this time though. If everything works I'll be very happy indeed. :)

Other than that all PC gaming seems to be about these days are endless FPS and Command and Conquer/Age of Empire clones, neither of which do it for me in any way.

I'm expecting Alan Wake to kill systems when on max settings, maybe more so than Crysis but I'm also expecting it to be a hell of a lot more optimised than Crysis is/was.

If they can't Nvidia needs to go back to the drawing board.

Tom Clancy's End War looks interesting, sounds sort of like World in Conflict with added voice commands and World in Conflict became quite intensive in parts so this could require an even more powerful PC.

Don't know if End War will be released on PC though.

or you could say at least when the new nvidia 9800's arrive delivering 2 or 3 times the power of the Ultra 8800's, we'll be able to play Crysis 1920*1200 max settings ... it's all just speculation with no factual information yet.

as a PC gamer i just want games with tons of playability on or offline, graphics don't influence my purchases.

where you get this information from? i think the 9 series will be able to

Does anyone know if the D9P 9 series (midrange) released in June will be exactly twice as fast as a 8800GT or is this just the high end version? (D9E)
Wonder how well Spore and GTA4 will perform too when they are released!
All the old grand theft auto games always seemed well optimised and played smoothly on mid range systems.

Everyone seems worried that Alan Wake will be really demanding on the gpu, after reading up about the game it looks more likely that the cpu will get stretched. Also it's gonna be on the xbox360 so good pc's should be able to run it fine surely?

Alan wake doesn't look anything special imo, graphics look very average to me. Cant really think of any games which look good for 2008.
