2011 Socket

3930k here. Love it. I got a pretty high vid chip but managed to get it to 4.8GHZ under water still.

As others have already said, X79 is great if you're a into overclocking & tweaking the system.

I'm sure the 2011 platform is great but for general desktop and gaming use there will be no difference from a 1155 system. If you are doing heavily threaded specialized work then the 2011 system is worth the extra. It seems a lot of people buy it for epeen status though :p

Price difference between the two isn't as much as some people think. That, along with the fact that there is an upgrade path for the platform in the form of IvyBridge-E whereas 1155 is at it's end.

Pretty much why i went LGA2011 instead of LGA1155. Also, X79 overclocking is genuinely a lot of fun and there is hope that the multiple cores will come in handy sometime soon.

There are reasons to choose it, they don't apply to everyone though.

64Gb RAM
Up to 8 cores 16 threads
More PCI-E lanes, handy when running 3 or 4 graphics cards
Cost not so bad
Upgrade path

Most 3930K actually overclock better in terms of CPU than Ivy too unless your using xtreme cooling.

My vote is X79 every time.

If you do any video on a regular basis 2011 is worth it's weight in gold with the time it saves you i am now able to do five files to previously one so means i have to spend less time watching the progress bar :D.

oh and the asrock z77 and the corsair domintor in the 1155 setup are on this week special offer ;) so give or take £20 added on.

So no one is wasting money in either setups it down to your own preference and use of the system.

But the 3820 only has 4 cores? So you may as well have the 1155 platform :p

4.75ghz as easy as plop. I would go for x79 and then only have to buy a processor next time there is a major release like IB-E next year. 1155 won't be able to fit these new chips next year but x79 will. I am planning on having at least 4 SSDs and have 3 already so the boards suit me more too.
