Hi, this is my 2012 system in need of TLC:

GeForce GTX 660
I5-3570K @ 3.40 Ghz - Socket H2 (LGA1155)
GIGABYTE Z77-DS3H - Intel Z77 (Panther Point DH)
Team Group Team-Elite-1600 8GB x 2 (16GB) DDR3 SDRAM
Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 600W
A couple of 128GB SSD
Old Dell 1680x1050 res monitor

I'm thinking an MSI GTX Armor 1060 or 1070. I've not got a 1440 monitor but I figure if I decide to pay the extra for the 1070 it will help anyway and allow me to upgrade the screen another time.

Would it be silly to get a 1070 then shortly after buy a 1080 monitor like the ASUS VG248QE?

Should I wait a month or so longer for the 1060/1070 price to drop?

I'd like to play Witcher 3 and Dishonored 2 (I know about the buggy performance) and whatever good new games take my fancy in the coming year or two.

Cheers,
Carl.

I would look at the Rx 480 8Gb over the GTX 1060 - better performance on average and would be perfect for 1080p gaming, if that's what you decide on. But be sure to update the BIOS if you do decide to get the 480 as they require more juice - and sometimes MBs need an update to accommodate.

If you plan to get a 1440p monitor i would definitely get the GTX 1070 and clock the 3570 to compliment it. You will have a very smooth gaming experience at 1440p even at Ultra in most games. Again - would do a BIOS update...

Thanks I will give the Rx 480 a proper look. I guess I've just got a bit of brand loyalty because the 660 has never given me any issues and I had to send a Radeon back. Long time ago though.

Edit: Just looked. Price of 480 certainly justifies some thought :-)

The RX 480s are great bang for buck -and there aren't the driver issues of old associated with AMD GFX now (not for a long time) so you'll have no issues and regular driver updates (has helped that consoles have adopted them).

Also, if you do decide to get the GTX 1060 - don't get the 3Gb version - it's a crippled 6Gb, not in the same league. Only get the 6Gb as you have the budget.

Yeah it would be 1060 6gb. If I was going to hit buy right now it'd be the not a whole lot more expensive 1070 and 144 1080 monitor.

Lots of people saying wait for Vega (to effect prices) is giving me doubts though.

They will - and if AMD are to be believed within the next 2 months. Depends how badly you need/want it - also it's an unknown how much it will effect prices.

If you shop around you can get a GTX 1070 Armour OC for £355 - but usually £335 it drops in and out of that price all the time. I got mine for £335 over 2 months ago - and it averages at £385 elsewhere.
