2013 IndyCar Series / Mazda Road to Indy discussion

Just spent 15 minutes looking for the first race on Sky Sports only to find it's on ESPN.

Sorry... Not paying extra for ESPN. Especially when it may not be around for the whole year - their main draw, the football, the contract for that expires the end of May.

Didn't BT take it over?

So, probably not watching Indycar this year. Shame.

Schedule on indycar.com mentions a "live stream", I'll look into whether they're actually putting the races on it (it was a feature in 2010/11).

Apparently. But with BT's own pay tv service coming on now, what's the chance that they'll keep it on sky as well?

Their channel range isn't as comprehensive as Sky so I think that would be a mistake.

Just waiting for the official practice highlights to go up, looks like Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Simona de Silvestro are setting the early pace. Track record is likely to be broken in qualifying, despite the reduction in horsepower from the CART days, and few driving aids (no power steering here).

Missed the race, sounds like it was exciting (though looking at the results those cautions were far too long). Shame to see Vautier let down by a car problem.

Edit: Hildebrand's drive will be under threat if he has another race like that. Been largely anonymous since the 2011 Indy 500.

Time for a quick update on the US junior racing series that make up the Mazda Road to Indy ladder:

Scott Hargrove continued his domination of the USF2000 series by winning rounds 3 and 4 at St Petersburg, bringing his championship lead to 43 points. Wyatt Gooden moved up to second in the standings on 79 points after finishing runner-up in both races. Further details available at the official series website: http://www.usf2000.com/Home.aspx

Matthew Brabham took two dominant wins in rounds 3 and 4 of the Pro Mazda championship to increase his points advantage. Brabham is currently on 118 points, 13 ahead of Diego Ferreira who is the only other driver to finish on the podium in all races run so far. Details here: http://www.starmazda.com/results/2013-schedule.htm

The opening round of the 2013 Indy Lights championship saw the reigning Pro Mazda champion Jack Hawksworth take the victory in his first start in the series, followed by Peter Dempsey and fellow rookie Sage Karam. Round 2 will take place at Barber Motorsports Park as support to the Indycar race on April 5-7, details here: http://www.indycar.com/RoadToIndy/Schedule

The 2013 season's initial oval testing and rookie orientation took place at Texas Motor Speedway this week, with Tristan Vautier, AJ Allmendinger and Carlos Munoz getting their oval bearings in an Indycar for the first time.

Several other drivers also participated in a private test on the same day, in preparation for the oval-heavy mid-season that starts with the Indy 500 in May.

In other news, Simona de Silvestro returned to her homeland of Italy and visited Dallara's facilities:

Indycar Series Round 2 of 19: Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama

21kky3c.png

Venue: Barber Motorsports Park, Birmingham, AL
Track length: 2.38 miles
Race length: 90 laps (214.2 miles)
Lap record: 1:07.129 (Will Power, Dallara IR12-Chevrolet, 2013 Barber Open Test)

Overview: Barber Motorsports Park opened in 2003, initially hosting Grand-Am events, but later adding AMA Superbikes and Indycar (along with its MRTI ladder series). The circuit contains a number of elevation changes amid its long sweeping corners and occasional chicane or hairpin. Its layout can best be described as "Barcelona's F1 circuit done right".

Good start from RHR, Power falls back. Vautier up to 2nd.

Race control say the start is being reviewed.

First pit stops beginning on lap 20, Hunter-Reay's lead is now 9 seconds. Vautier under pressure from Kimball for second place, Dixon closing in also.

Hunter-Reay, Castroneves, Kimball, Dixon, Power, Franchitti, Pagenaud, Vautier, Newgarden, Andretti are the top 10 after 42 laps. Power trying to pull off a 2-stop strategy, most of his rivals are doing 3 stops.

Final stint now, Castroneves and Hunter-Reay are battling for the lead. Scott Dixon is third followed by Will Power and Charlie Kimball. Tristan Vautier down to 9th after running well in the first 20-30 laps.

RHR takes the lead at the hairpin and locks a wheel, and Dixon follows through later in the lap to take second place. Hunter-Reay will still have his hands full for the last 14 laps.

Only just caught up with the race... Strange time for them to put it on being that it wasn't even live, oh well.

Yeah, it's a shame as there's good racing but nobody wants to promote it...

Enjoyed the race, really quite like that track it seems to have a good flow to it.

It helps that off-season development has made the cars ~3.5 seconds quicker than last year.

Have to feel for Dixon 4th year in a row of 2nd :p

He'll be a title threat, he's acclimated to the new chassis much better than Dario has.
