2014 Chilli Growers Thread

Last year's harvest (which I kind of just dumped the plants on uv for) wasn't great but that's mostly due to rubbish seeds and incorrectly thinking that the awesome weather meant that they would do well outside.

I'm the same. Disappointing harvest last year, probably due to plants being outside most of the summer (NE England probably not warm enough). They'll be staying indoors this year in the windowsill to get maximum sun and warmth.

I have one Cayenne plant overwintering and one Jalapeno. I'll be planting more of these as well as some Scotch Bonnet. I planted Scotch Bonnet last year but they were a disaster due to my neighbour not watering them while I was away. I have seeds I bought as well as seeds I harvested from one I bought from Morrisons so I'll be trying both. I've also ordered some Naga Bhut Jolokia seeds and will be giving them a go.

I've had reasonable success in previous years just planting them and putting them in the windowsill but this year I've bought a propagator to give them a bit of a head start. It's not a heated one but it will be placed above my main BOINC rig which pushes a fair amount of warm air out of the top radiator. I'm due home next Friday so I'll get them started as soon as I get back.

Trinidad Scorpion Butch T, Naga Viper Seeds and Orange Habanero for me this year.

I need to make sure they don't get as rain drenched this year though, last years fatalli and choc Bhuts weren't exactly mind blowing, although they fruited well. Also going for chilli focus instead of tomato feed this year.

Wondered where my question had gone, checked and realised search found me the 2013 thread, doh! So re-posting:

Decided it was finally time to get in the growing game - so I cheated. Bought a kit from Amazon which has habanero, jalapeno, tabasco and numex seeds. Got them all set up and now I'm just (impatiently) waiting for them to germinate.

I'm pretty sure this is the most obvious question ever, but I assume if I wanted to grow more plants, I can just use the seeds from inside any chillies that do grow?

Going to start the germination this week. Will try your bag tip Glauc! Hopefully stops it drying out and they sprout. Not many seeds of these left due to them not working for me :'(

Wet paper towel in a bag works well - or if you want to find it a bit easier to deal with the seedlings I'd recommend using a tupperware container instead.

Really should get seeds sown this week... So..lazy...

Had 4 sprouts so decided to put them all in the propagator. Fingers crossed something emerges in weeks to come.

Is it not a bit too early to be starting them off? Or are you all using lights?

I'm tempted to just buy a few plants from B&Q again this year around feb/march. Last years plants I paid a couple of quid for 2 and the produced loads of peppers.

Its the perfect tome to start them if you have room in the house. You want to get them as big as you can before summer. But you need the warmth and a sunny windowsill.

Mine have been growing since September. That's just seeds straight into compost and then on a windowsill in a small ikea greenhouse.

Repotted them this weekend:

Ordered some purple jalapenos and some random strain of habanero. Should be here by the end of the week, at which point I'll get them somewhere warm and moist (no sniggering).

I plan to keep the seedlings under lights for at least a little while, yeah. Even if I wasn't then it's getting to about the right sort of time to sow seeds.

What advantage does the light give to the seedlings? I may not be familiar with the terminology but to me the seedling is before it sprouts out the top of the soil so I don't see what advantage that would give as it's underground.
PS: Always snigger on 'moist.

Arrrrr bugger! I've missed this thread. Got some reading and catching up to do. I have had my seeds for this year delivered and will get them sown this week!

Last year was very successful and my chilli plants from last year (yes I still have them) still have fruit on!

I am germinating:

Santa Fe Grande
Pimento de Padron
Fatalii Yellow
Goronong
CAP 253c
Scorpion Marouga
Choc Bhut
Bulgarian Carrot

and I have overwintered a small Bhut Jolokia plant which didn't do much last season. I expect it to do better this season.

I had a chilli growing kit as a stocking filler for xmas!

Its south devon chili farm and the plant it Apache chilli.

I sowed them xmas day only got 3 seeds and some chilli focus fertiliser. Will add pic later. Tallest is about 3 inches at the minute!
