2014 F56 MINI Cooper S Review

Yeah I think the Cooper looks a really good sweet spot.

When I turned my GF into a wife she pursued me to get a Countryman! Atleast that's an S, has decent residuals and dirt cheap servicing... which is also part of the 'MINI experience.'

The only other quelms I had was the rear visability.. the rear window isn't exactly the biggest.

As for the looks I know with a lot of people it's like Marmite. You either love it or you hate it! But as far as bang for buck and quality, I don't think it's all that bad!

I think the Cooper looks less gopping than the S, also by all accounts the 134bhp 3-pot is bit of a cracker.

They are great because they are fun, quirky, look cool and are very very cheap to own. Buy the right one and it won't depreciate much, it wont cost anything to service as many have a 5 year service pack and when the warranty expires its a trivial 30 quid a month to keep it going.

Total no-faff motoring.

Does this go for second hand used approved Minis as well?

It looks like an old holly wood star thats had too much facial work, its got that surprised face. No douubt it will be a great car, but why cant BMW do pretty cars anymore, just look at the current 1 series, just plain fugly.

The mini has really become a chunky so and so. I don't like what it's turned into.

Thumbs down

The problem is thinking that its linked to anything to mean it has "turned into" anything.

If you ignore the name and look at it as an isolated instance of 3 generations of BMW FWD small car then they are great. Trying to see it as some sort of continuation of the 60s Mini is always going to be difficult, even if BMW insist on marketing it this way.

As a modern FWD small car up against Clios and Fiestas etc, its a great car.

Always liked the look of the new mini but the front splitter/valance design in this latest iteration is hideous.

Is this the case? I thought it was around £600-£700/yr for the extended warranty (for a cooper S)?

Test drove the new Mini Cooper S on Saturday and it's not a bad little car but one of major gripes is with the gearbox. Going forward isn't a problem, but reverse! I spent ages trying to get it into reverse before finally admitting defeat and getting the salesman to do it. I even tried in the showroom but still couldn't succeed. I can't understand why it's located where it is, when so many better alternatives exist?

My Focus ST has it located in a perfect location, just beyond 6th gear and it takes care of blocking it off so you don't accidentally go from 5th to reverse.

Other than that, it drove quite well and handle nicely but performance was lacking sadly

Comprehensive warranty with £100 excess and no emergency service is quite a bit cheaper than that, IIRC, provided the car is under 60k.

Never got on with the 55 plate Mini Cooper-S we had but I can see the appeal and why they are so desirable to women. No doubt it comes with run flats which completely destroy the ride?
