2014 PC doing nothing, is it possible to convert to a WinXP rig?

Why xp?
If you don't like Windows 8/8 point 1
Pretty sure although meant to have done ages ago Microsoft haven't actually stopped free upgrade to 10

Read it the other day somewhere though don't remember exact details of what was involved

Because we're in a retro forum.. assume OP wants to play games that require XP?
 
That should be fine with XP on it, but as above you'll lose half your RAM. Make sure you install chipset drivers though. It doesn't come with a GPU I assume - you could put anything up to and including Nvidia 700 series cards in there.

XP gaming is great on S775 PCs so it will fly on that PC.

I should have mentioned in my post. Another big retro fan/gamer here. :)

I am well chuffed it's doable. It came with an NVidia 760 - just checked NV site and there are drivers.

Essentially it's my old PC, purchased an upgrade so it now sits doing nothing. A great little unit so its a shame to leave it gathering dust. It currently runs Windows 10 although I will remove the existing drive and pick up a replacement for the XP install.

I like Windows XP and it covers a period of my favourite games and programs (Macromedia Director and After Dark :D). Whilst I like Dos, my favourite games (Ultima 7, Aces of the Pacific, pretty much all of the Microprose Sims etc) Dosbox has this covered. XP will fill the gap for those awkward games (Rowans flight sims). I know its cheating but I tried the original kit route (great fun whilst it lasted) but bad caps/PSU's etc put me off due to a lack of knowledge/skills. Love reading about other retro gamers exploits though!

My main worry would be all the other drivers not just nvidia ones

Are all the other drivers available for xp?

Worse, a lot was 16-bit, which couldn't be executed at all on a 64-bit OS.
 
Thanks for advice everyone, it worked a treat and all is working well.

I recently caught sight of Phil's video and forgot about Snappy Driver (4:27):


After a couple of boots to settle down and recognise all USB devices. Its working fine. I got as far as installing and running Far Cry tonight which looks good.

Currently using a KVM switch to alternate between main set up and sharing one monitor with my 'new' XP computer. Using Realtek sound for now as it simply works! I purchased a Sound Blaster X-FI HD (external) months back to find that the drivers were spotty with XP. One minute the sound works brilliantly, only it would drop the sound after a short while or when you next boot - you find no sound! Infuriating.

Not sure I'll try the Xi-Fi on this computer as it drove me nuts last time. Might see if there is another card I can try.

Anyway, talking of annoying glitches, NVidia and scaling? ATI drivers work brilliantly, yet NVidia drivers, monitor keeps being recognised as TV so you cannot scale - goddammit.
 
A Vogons poster experienced the same problems as me, using a fairly modern card (for retro gaming) when XP gaming. Later Nvidia XP drivers for 760+ are simply bugged so you have to rewind.

Drivers GeForce 352.86 work a treat!

Scaling on my monitor now works, 4:3 Far Cry/Quake 3 pop! :)
