I have been contemplating the new R8 V10 Plus as an upgrade. I love mine, but have kept looking at the new one each time I go into the Audi garage and thought I would borrow one for a few hours to see what it's like. It is very rapid, a little quicker than mine (extra 60bhp) with a different power delivery that feels lively at the lower end and the reduced weight is also apparent. They have nicely tuned the exhaust too, not that mine doesn't sound superb and as you can imagine it has some really clever technology and all the toys you want.

However, the steering is not a patch on mine (this one had the active set up) and the dampers are trick modern sorts with lots of settings making the ride fantastic but frankly losing something in that. I honestly preferred mine, it is more fun to drive, moves around more and though the steering is less highly geared I much prefer it. I move the new one a millimetre and it moves a foot, mine has less sharpness, but it has much more feel and I also found the new one acted very odd twice as the variable set up changed its mind mid overtake...twice. Didn't like that at all and would order one without if I was buying (I am not) as I would go for the standard sports set up. Also in white it looked a little lost and frankly mine looked miles better in red.

So worth a go but the cost of change didn't make sense for a car that would be a bit quicker, less fun to drive but have some nicer kit. However and as a Porsche fan I never thought I'd say this, but if I was in need of 2 seat rapid transport I would take this over a 991 Turbo AND Turbo S. Just miles more special and the engine is so special.

Seems to be a few subtle differences styling wise - maybe more carbon bits?

Much prefer the red colour - I'm not a fan of white cars generally speaking anyway but it seems to look much more like a TT in white...

White does nothing for it, neither does all black. Blue looks good as does Red both of which I have seen, and Blue is what I had specced and found with the Carbon sides for preference, but the one I found and was considering was grey sides and didn't look as good. I think with the standard steering (not a variable set up) and the standard dampers (fixed set up) it would be a much better steer and fun drive, not that the one I borrowed was anything but superb, but less would be more I think. Epic pace and frankly traction was the best I have ever experienced in any car. It was a very wet day when I had the car and I could floor it in any gear and it sorted it when mine would have been spinning all 4 wheels. It as a sports additional setting with further snow, dry or wet setting, very clever.

Sounds like a great drive to be honest - not having to worry about traction so much but still having the feedback would be the best combination. I guess it's personal preference though - depends what you want from the car.

I presume any demo models out there are all highly specced so you'd be hard pressed to find any without the variable steering/suspension setup? Actually, has anything changed in that respect compared to your model?

Does the car not have a front?

No, I could not afford that mate. I've got a new Polo GTi arriving on Monday so will have that welded to the front to make it look VDub ;)

Most come with a pack that contains steering, dampers and sports exhaust but I created this spec, which dropped steering and dampers, but obviously kept the noise exhaust. Most if not all dealer demo models are fully specced yes. My car didn't have the option, it comes with fixed suspension and steering where as all the other R8's came with active suspension, which rides better but is less sharp.

Had no idea that you had bought an R8 Congrats on the purchase I guess:), I probably need to spend more time here. Interesting to hear the comparison, was wondering if the new R8 would be as connected as the previous version.

Interesting points. Must admit I absolutely love the look of the new model, think they did a great job.

Really fancy chopping in the DB9 for an R8 but it really just looks like something that has been rented for a wedding in Birmingham :(

The new one in the OP with the white and black colour scheme does. It looks awful :(

I can't believe how much more classy and less chavtastic his red one looks.

Depends if you dribble.

Insist on full-face, and a headsock. That way his dribble becomes his problem ;)

Back to the car, I'm not surprised in the slightest that the newer car is both quicker yet more detached. Seems to be the way of the world at present. :(

Black wheels. Black wheels ruin everything. I wish that trend would FOAD, it's getting difficult to spec a new car with wheels that aren't utter gash.
