2016 R8 V10 Plus

Understandable, sounds scary and unpredictable, not features you want when approaching the limit. Maybe Audi aren't prepared for genuinely sporty drivers ;)

It's an odd thing but both situations were disconcerting. The first time I actually said to myself "odd" and then carried on thinking it was something that just happened. Second time, at a rapid overtake, when it pulled me towards the car on the left I was passing I actually slowed down and had a long think. When you are in sports mode it is supposed to change the steering to be linear, but I can't recall a situation where I wasn't in sport for more that a minute playing with settings at obviously slow speeds. It genuinely surprised me, hence going off to read up about the steering and in doing so it showed I was not alone. It makes the steering and suspension feel detached if that makes sense. I am sure you would get used to it, but on first drive, even as I pulled out the dealer to get petrol with the sales guy my first comment was "this steering is lifeless and far far to light".

I think the new R8 looks epic and the old one a little too bland for what it is. But, the reasons you've highlighted is exactly why you have to test a car. The whole sensation of driving is the reason these cars exist.

To add on the sports button, mine just sharpens the responsiveness of the engine along with the turbo spooling faster (I believe, feels it at least, probably complex computery) while burning more fuel doing so.
