Time to replace my old build with the next, intended for the next 5 years.

5900x and the asus x570-f have been secured as part of a bundle deal
3080 was delivered on friday

looking at downsizing from the current primo and really like the look of the pc-011 but know it's not good for air-cooling. fractal design probalby preferred option as i'm not really a fan of rgb and prefer nice clean designs.

few of the parts are in the basket for indication only (would likely go sabrent rocket for ssd and crucial ballistix cl16 32gb kit from elsewhere)

really don't want to go water cooling route after my swiftech h240x failed and toasted the old 2070 super a couple of months back. i do want to keep things cool and quiet.

my basket at overclockers uk:
Total: £2,567.85 (includes shipping: £28.02)

Get the chromax version of the nochtua is all black or the dark rock pro 4. The lian lii case will need some fans , arctic p12 or p14 pwm are excellent value for money.

Psu you can't get a quality 850w for that money.

That super undynamic case has crap internal space for big external dimensions thanks to "different for the sake of different" BS design.
As result that Noctua is 1cm too high for it.

Scythe Fuma 2/Mugen 5 are the best coolers fitting into it.
And while superb coolers for the price, Intel optimized convex base might need lapping it flat to work well with flattish heatspreader and chiplet design of Ryzens.

This was possibly about that:
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...-matching-or-beating-scythe-mugen-5.18902588/
(though also noctua is some amount convex)

also you'll want case fans to be blowing air directly at motherboard/parts.
under that fancy look asus has crap straight from anus of marketroids x570 chipset coolers:
actual heatsink under marketing excrements is tiny.
and relies on constant airflow from constantly running constricted by more marketing excrement fan.
with whole crud positioned into worst place directly under graphics card to be bathed in its heat.
so chipset will heat up fast in gaming sessions with such hot card there.
(and should be easy to guess what happens if/when fan wears out)

If purpose is gaming instead of paying for PCIe v4 hype, you should go for 2TB drive to guaranteedly fit many games.
2TB Adata SX8200 Pro/Gammix S11 Pro doesn't cost that much more.

BeQuiet PSUs are brand overpriced with their basic level 5 year warranty.
For example this would have doubled warranty length for lower price:

And with semi paper launch of Nvidia, AMD's new cards might be faster in shops. Release is only 10 days away.

Fairpoints, chromax or dark rock pro definitely preferable to the standard noctua colour scheme.

PSU I think may be dictated by availability more than anything else - I have an EVGA 1000 G2 I could re-use but it's noisier than I'd like. I've recently used a be quiet pure power 600W CM in another build and been very happy with it so far.

PC-011 Dynamic only takes air coolers up to 155mm height so the big noctuas or Bequiet wont fit, I know because I own said case to my cost. PC-011D XL is a bit bigger & will take Air coolers up to 167mm tall, so it will take some of the bigger air coolers. I'd check the max height of any air cooler before buying the former case. I believe the most of the scythes will fit said case. Personally I have the Thermalright 120 Macho cooler on a R5 3600 & it does the job, though not as much as I would like.

thanks for pointing out the heatsink limitation on the pc-o11d (also @grimley ) - that's really surprising and leads me towards the define 7 as that accommodates heatsink upto 185mm and improved airflow. i really don't want to muck about with getting heatsinks lapped to get them working effectively so will look into that further.

yeah - it is a concern with active cooling on x570, was unfortunately limited to asus options on the ryzen bundles so stuck with it for now - if it becomes an issue i can switch to another motherboard in the future. will see what i can do with additional fans to try and improve airflow.

i know where you're coming from, real world i don't see much between nvme and sata ssd but this is forward looking build so will just put os and key apps/games on fastest storage available. i've got a spare 1tb corsair mp510 and 1tb samsung evo 850 that's still healthy so can always move them over for additional app storage if needed - bulk data storage is on a nas.

PSU I just want something reliable and quiet - last few PSUs have been seasonic/superflower (or rebadged versions) based on their reputation - think PSU availability at the moment is going to be the bigger issue here so may just reuse the EVGA 1000 G2 and see how I get on.

I was almost disappointed to receive the 3080 last friday for that very reason - if it'd taken any longer I was probably going to cancel and see what the 6000s performed like, specially given the performance benefits on an AMD platform (also the 6900 isn't that much more than a 3080 so would have been quite a temptation)

Only coolers with certainly flat base are direct contact heatpipe coolers.
(because of manufacturing process)
Tweaktown is only site I know which checks shape of the cooler base and don't remember others having flat base.
Simply because of Intel's monolithic die in center of toward concave heatspreader works well with convex heatsink.

Alpenfohn Brocken 3 at now discounted £30 price would be good direct contact heatpipe cooler

Small drives just consume limited M.2 slots fast.

No reason to change that likely ~5 years old high quality EVGA.

The final build is looking like this :

  • 32GB Crucial Ballistix CL16 3600MHz Memory
  • Adata XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB M.2 SSD

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,034.52 (includes shipping: £14.70)

R6 chosen as better airflow than my previous preferred options (I know not as good as good as mesh fronted but still respectable performance).
Seasonic psu chosen for acoustics & reliability (such a shame that 800+ quality PSUs are pretty much non-existant).
Heatsink - DRP4 chosen as it has very good acoustics, cooling performance and provides RAM clearance - hopefully just enough for the crucial ballistix.
