I'm looking at a new build to replace my aging X58 rig (longest serving PC I've ever had and arguably I could go on with it... but it's been 5 years and I have an itch to scratch. It'll be repurposed as a Dev/Test box so won't be moving any internal components over to the new build).

I can build it myself.

Budget approx £1500 - Not including GFX budget

Monitor, Keyboard & Peripherals will come from existing build

Goals:
Gfx Performance - I have have an Oculus DK2 and a 4k monitor - Benq BL3201PT currently being driven by a 290X 8GB I'm planning on initially using a single 980Ti or one of the new AMD cards due to launch in June but would like SLI/Crossfire capability - I can't realistically see me needing/wanting more than 2 cards in the future.

X99 Platform - I think the 28 lanes provided by i7-5820K should be sufficient for 2 gfx cards and PCIx4/NVMe storage.

Storage - NVMe/PCIe SSD options - need a mobo that can support this with 2 gfx cards - initially

Aesthetics - I like simple designs, Fractal Design, Lian Li cases normally fit the bill - I really do like the Phanteks Enthoo Primo though (and my SO picked it out the page as her preferred case...) looks good and styling isn't over the top (understand it's VERY big but thats not an issue)

Overclocking - I enjoyed overclocking the X5650 and would like to do again and also go down the water cooling route - initially with an AIO and maybe a custom loop later.

I've picked out the following based on the above (note that I've put in a standard SSD for now due to limited availability of the Intel 750 series PCIe SSD). A fair few things on Offer this week and can also take advantage of the Intel cashback!

Appreciate any feedback or recommendations you have on the build

I've heard rumours of people with problems with the USB controllers on that motherboard (more so than other boards, but that might be because more people have them).

The Samsung 951 MZ-VPV512 (The NVMe) version of the above 4 lane M2. SSD is announced but rarer than hens teeth, I have allowed £1000 in the budget as an upgrade to this.

Also as a note on this 8-Pack recommends the SOC Champion board as best for overclocking.

Yeah, I'm not 100% convinced with the asus boards myself, I heard of a few issues when the boards were first released, supposedly due to the OC socket. Would be interested to hear of other peoples experiences with the asus boards though.

Your selection looks good but I might need some convincing on those colours (the black/gold primo is really nice though)...
I did see a build using a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SOC, H440 and a limited edition MSI 970 which together looked stunning.

Sounds like you've done your homework.

Only thing I'd point out is both PSUs are overkill in terms of price.

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA SuperNova 1000W '80 Plus Platinum' Modular Power Supply (220-P2-1000-XR) £161.99
1 x XFX 1250W Black Edition Pro '80+ Gold' Certified Modular Power Supply - 5 Year Warranty £144.95
Total : £306.94 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

Either of these will do, the EVGA comes with a 10 year warranty.

Isn't the EVGA a rebadged Superflower?
I was looking at both Seasonic and Superflower models and picked the former simply because the cables were plain black compared to the Superflowers that had connectors that weren't matched - maybe daft but hey :o

YOUR BASKET
1 x SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 1000W Fully Modular "80 Plus Platinum" Power Supply - White £149.99
Total : £159.59 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

I quite like this, had spotted the PANRAM but it's a brand I'm completely unfamiliar with - do people rate it? Does it even matter with RAM nowadays? It's not something I'd be looking at overclocking so maybe brand doesn't matter - does look the part though :)

Thanks for the pointer on the krait, the MSI boards seem to be getting quite good reviews and I'd looked at the MSI X99S SLI Plus previously - certainly works with the theme.

Any reason why the Asus boards (Deluxe in particular) are so popular - is it brand or do the features/performance really beat the competition?

It is indeed, that is not a bad choice either.

RAM modules are only really manufactured by 2 / 3 companies right now.
So RAM from different companies for the same speed ratings should perform pretty much the same.

In terms of Asus they used to really be the boards with all the bells and whistles, however other manufacturers are really starting to catch up.

In terms of the X99 platform I'd definitely recommend the Gigabyte SOC Champion, the Asus Rampage V Extreme or the Asus X99-E WS.
In terms of overclocking, personally I'd go with one of the first 2 boards.

Just so you know, the EVGA G2 1000W doesn't have the "Eco" mode (hybrid fan on/off) but the P2 does, so that might sway your choice if you were considering the G2 :)
