2021 MacBook Pro 14/16" Discussion

Wouldn't something like the Asus Duo laptops have be better then a touch bar ?

Maybe apple is bringing out there own version of something like this instead of the touch bar

It would be interesting to see how Apple would do something like that. With the keyboard being so low down I can only think of that becoming a pain in the wrist for those typing on it for a while. Mind, the idea of flipping the bottom screen up for the cooling is a good idea, but the feeding of hot air around two OLED displays surely cannot be good in the long term?!

I was thinking that at first about the keyboard with it being so low down but if look at most standard apple keyboards it shouldn't really be any different to typing on one of them..;)

It'd be pretty cool if they could do something with the USB-C, adapting it into making it magnetic. May require using a £129 apple charging cable to utilise it via magsafe but you can use a normal USB-C to charge as well if you like.

The idea of having 2 different ports to charges just seems fiddly and unnecessary.

Not entirely though, as the base of my Magic Keyboard is so low it's almost part of the desk, so my wrists are generally supported by the desk itself. But I guess the issue is just me nitpicking really :p

A lot of rumours coming out these last couple days, so you think these YouTube reviewers have there 14/16inch but can’t say anything.

I'd like the next generation of Macs to really push Continuity and Handoff to the next level.

Whether it comes to these upcoming revisions of the MBP remains to be seen.

Really hope they keep the USB-C ports as we rolled out 100+ Thunderbolt 3 docks to support our Mac users & these are going be due a refresh next financal year (although architecture switch & pandemic may delay this)

What is the next level?

In a nutshell, much more intelligent location and task specific awareness from your devices.

We currently have the ability to copy and paste from your phone to mac, to unlock devices using your watch, and to open tabs from one active device to another. I know there is more but roughly this is where we are at.

But I'm imaging the following:
  • Need to insert an image while using your phone? Hold it up next to your screen and swipe it over. As in physically swipe off the screen towards the other device. Same could be done for screen mirroring, audio playback or any productivity task. Similar to audio handoff now, but that requires close proximity.
  • Wearing your AirPods, if any devices start to play audio it instantly switches as it knows your proximity to the devices (are you the one that used the remote on the Apple TV type thing) and you direction of awareness. No manual switching required.
  • Automatically adjust volume of loudspeaker/desktop output depending on your location in the room. Could Homepods do something even more complex by knowing your location in the room with an Apple Watch, plus do some maths based on an AR scan of your room to know how to precisely tune its output for a best listening experience, wherever you are in the room?
  • In addition to gestures, Siri gets smarter with handoff requests. "Hey Siri, put this all on my iPad". It would know if you meant to move your browser tabs from your phone or you desktop, again based on proximity.
  • There should be a global 'resume' of audio that happens automatically. All you devices know what you were just listening to type thing.
This is just off the top of my head... I'm sure the teams at Apple can come up with really mind-blowing stuff and with that seemly 'you never knew life before it' touches they specialise in.

Already does that, doesn't it? If I'm watching a video on my ipad then switch to my phone and it plays it auto switches. It actually started annoying me so I turned it off.

Exactly, it already does that... but as you said it can be annoying.

Is there a way for it to be a lot smarter about what you do and do not want to be playing through your AirPods? Is there a way to combine audio streams, fading the old one to lower levels while the newer audio is played more loudly? Can it be context-aware or location-aware as well?

As I said, what we have at the moment is the first generation of where Handoff needs to be. Still really useful, but there's always space for innovation.

I bought myself a Lenovo with a Ryzen 4700 as a stop gap between my old MBP and a 14 inch refresh, but I've actually been really happy to have a Windows machine recently to play some games online with friends during lockdown. Not sure whether to get another MacBook now. I absolutely loved my old one and it's streets ahead of Windows, but I can't justify two laptops and would be giving up on online fun with friends if I ditched the Lenovo. Tough one... Knowing me I'll wind up with two laptops

shadow.tech could be a good option?

I think that’s be even worse to be honest. I do agree though we are in the early stages be interesting to see how it progresses.

I have two laptops, I use the windows one solely for gaming. Everything else on the MBP. It’s the best way, best of both worlds. In hindsight though, I’d have got a windows desktop instead for the better spec for gaming. I was so close to building a new desktop as well but didn’t want a £2k laptop sitting doing nothing.

I completely agree with everything that everyone's said above. If I was buying from scratch now I'd get a Windows desktop and an MBP, as they're league's ahead of Windows laptops. But given that all I really use my laptop for is light gaming and writing, I probably can't justify the MBP, as sad as that is!

I have a work provided 15" MBP. It'll be replaced in a few years by a 16". I also have a gaming PC and to be honest I use the Mac for everything bar gaming. I fancy an M2 powered Air for personal use moving forward as I don't want to keep using my work machine.

I honestly only want a few things in my next macbook all of which are almost guaranteed.

M1/M2 chip
32GB RAM
16" screen or perhaps 14" if they reduce the bezels
Crazy long battery life

I don't care about losing the touchbar and have come to like it for the most part. I use my laptop in clamshell mode and miss a few of the features. Honestly the main thing I miss is touchID though. Media keys are mapped to my external keyboard.

I don't care about any ports other than USB-C. Very few things I have are not USB-C now and I have a couple of adaptors for those. I would rather encourage the complete adoption of USB-C than give manufacturers an excuse.

My 16" MBP is already great but I know that when they bring our the next generation of the M-series chip with 4 ports and 32GB+ of RAM its going to make this look like a 5 year old laptop even though its only a year old.
